I have a BA degree in Spanish from The Ohio State University (OSU) & love to teach & learn foreign languages. Including Spanish, I have also studied Portuguese, Italian, French & German.

While at OSU, I studied abroad in Spain & traveled to Portugal. I have also traveled to Mexico, Costa Rica & 7 West African countries.

I have an MS degree in international relations from Troy State University & love to learn about people from other countries. I personally believe that when you learn a foreign language it's also important to learn the culture of those who speak that language.

As a Peace Corps volunteer in West Africa, I lived for 3 months in Cape Verde & 3 years in Guinea-Bissau teaching English as a second language. During my time there, I traveled to the Gambia, Senegal, Mali, Ivory Coast, Ghana & Cape Verde.

So, whatever your language needs are - Spanish, beginning Portuguese, English/grammar, writing, reading & ESOL/ESL - let me help.

Nos vemos pronto.

ESL/ESOL,

ESL/ESOL

Right after leaving the military, I taught English as a second language. Shortly thereafter, I taught English as a second language in the Peace Corps for more than 2 years. I also wrote curricula for 7th and 8th grade students during my 3rd year in the Peace Corps.
Grammar,

Grammar

English grammar can be challenging because often times we don't speak properly and we find ourselves writing the same way as we speak. If we speak grammatically correct, we are more likely to write grammatically correct. What has helped me in English grammar was studying foreign languages; it forced me to learn English grammar so that I could understand grammar in other languages.
Portuguese,

Portuguese

I studied Brazilian Portuguese in college and obtained 240 hours of Portuguese in the Peace Corps, which is equivalent to a college degree. There is a slight difference in the pronunciation of Brazilian Portuguese and Portuguese spoken in Portugal and Lusophone countries, and I'm familiar with all. Although I speak, read and write Portuguese, I only tutor students who are currently studying Portuguese in college.

As a tutor for several subjects, I not only tutor the student in that particular subject, but I also help the student get organized. Depending on the grade level of the student, I help the student organize his/her weekly assignments and prepare in advance for quizzes and tests. For my elementary students, I make sure they have a folder that has pockets on each side and instruct them to use the left side pocket for “HOME” – things that go home such as homework or notes to parents. Then I instruct them to use the right pocket for completed homework/worksheets and notes to their teachers or the principal. I also ask the parent(s) to help their child manage the folder. For my middle and high school students, I encourage them to use a planner, especially if one isn’t provided for them by their school. I have students write down important dates in advance in their planner and ask them to do this weekly, keep them up to date, and to make sure they check it daily. If middle and high school students have an iPhone, I have them set up reminders a day or two in advanced for upcoming assignments/projects and/or quizzes/tests. I also help middle and high school students organize their binders and make sure they have a section for each class they have and a section for homework. Another tool I use for my older students, especially for my high school and college students, is the use of index cards. This is an easy way to study alone or with someone else no matter where you are. I recently had a college student use this method and received a B on her exam. Finally, I help and encourage students to take good notes in class, seek assistance after class/school, and review homework, quizzes and tests.

Awesome!

My son had only had one session, but his confidence and eagerness to study after that is what I'm looking for. She gave him pointers and different things to focus on that will help him move forward.

L.D great Spanish Tutor

We were looking for a tutor to help build our daughters confidence in 8th grade Spanish and our session was great. Our daughter said the lessons were given in a fun way and she was able to retain the tips provided by the tutor for making Spanish easier to pick up going forward. Great tutor!

Rod, 1 lesson with L

Knowledgeable, Understanding, and Very Supportive

We are thankful that we selected Ms. Latawnya and she offered to tutor our daughter in Spanish. Ms. Latawnya made good suggestions in areas where assistance was needed. Ms. Latawnya was very patient and gave great advice which helped in many ways. My daughter has improved in Spanish and her grade is on level now. Thank you Ms. Latawnya for your support and assistance in this matter.

First session went extremely well.

My son has recently started tutoring services for Spanish. He stated that his first initial session with his new tutor went extremely well. He was able to understand the breakdown of the language and where he is going wrong. We are very pleased so far and I pray he gets it to improve his grade. Thanks again.
