About Julian

I have been teaching English for 13 years, ages 12 to 18. My skills for one on one tutoring are exceptional because I understand the needs each individual student has and I am able to convey what students need to be successful. Students get along great with me and I am often sought after for classes, even when students think I tough in the beginning of the school year. I am highly skilled at all aspects of Literature, Grammar, Analysis, Test Preparation, AP, Honors, Writing, and Poetry. I can help students with any level of English homework and even some math test prep for SATs, Geometry and Algebra. Now, I am an early retiree, working to uplift the Speech and Debate community, serving as President and CEO of the DC Urban Debate League. I can't escape my love for English, so I am an online English teacher and tutor. I have three children of my own, ages 9, 7 and 4. The two oldest kids attend Maya Angelou French Immersion School and my youngest boy is home-schooled and will attend a wonderful Private School in the fall 3 days a week. I am highly skilled at all aspects of Literature, Grammar, Analysis, Test Preparation, AP, Honors, Writing, and Poetry. I can help students with any level of English homework and even some math test prep for SATs, Geometry and Algebra. Most of all, I am able to work with students on not just memorizing English terms, but truly learning the meaning of literary concepts. I help develop that love for English many students abhor after having boring or rote English classes. Give me a shot at taking you to a higher level of English proficiency, love and appreciation for literature, writing and reading! Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Public Speaking

Forensics is the art of public speaking. I have been a Forensics Coach for 4 years. One student qualified for the National Forensics League National Championship after placing in the top 4 in the State Championship in VA. I coached a team of over 40 students by myself and in the Virginia High School League I produced several district and regional champions; two of which placed in the top 10 in the state for the VHSL.

Study Skills

I have taught English for 8 years and every year I build on the strategies of studying for tests, quizzes and other assessments. I am currently enrolled in a prestigious course at George Mason University that discusses different strategies for success that are extremely helpful in regard to study skills.
I also completed AVID certification, which is a Nationwide effort to improve the college acceptance rate of students who are "in the middle". The program is targeted to those students who are able to do the work with a push. Look up AVID, and you will be pleasantly surprised.

Theatre

I was drama department chair at Frederick Douglass High School for three years and lead a talented group of students. Several students graduated and are currently enrolled in Universities with theater degrees.
I taught at a Dance/Theatre company in Upper Marlboro for one year. The ages of the students were from 3 to 18.

Vocabulary

Taught English for 13 years. Knowledge of grammar rules and story elements are essential to success in this subject. Also, my major in college was English. I also passed the English Praxis 1 and 2.
