Salisbury Univeristy (Elementary Education)
I am a full time 3rd grade teacher for the Baltimore County Public School System. I have worked in BCPS for the past 4 years in a variety of different way and in many different grades. I have been in 3rd grade for 2 years but have experience working with K, 2nd, 4th, and 5th grade as well as technology class. I love children and it warms my heart so watch them grow.
I love tutoring because it gives me the opportunity one on one to really personalize that students learning. It is fun to make connections to real life situations and to that students life in order to make a more engaging and relevant learning situation. I believe building a positive relationship with students is the key to helping them learn, in a tutoring situation this is easily achieved.
I enjoy connecting Math to every day life. If you can't find a way to make Math fit into the real world, it is unrealistic for a student to be engaged and want to learn Math. I love working with different strategies and manipulatives in order to build a concrete and ultimately abstract understanding of Math concepts. It's important to grow that concrete math understanding so when it comes time to build further on the basics, your child is ready and excited to take it to the next level. I love building that confidence. When your child can explain and teach math to you, and has the confidence to push forward to achieve new goals, I know I've been successful. This is my goal for not only every student in my classroom, but for every child I tutor as well.
English has always been one of my favorite subjects. I love connecting with books and building a deeper understanding of not only the story we are reading, but a personal connection as well. It is important that students find a way to identify with the characters, the topic or the idea of a text. When you can identify with a text, or find the topic interesting, you can really dig deeper with English concepts to learn, for example: identifying cause and effect relationships. Finding the cause behind an event happening is much more fun and meaningful if you actually care WHY. I strive to make learning fun in a realistic way, in this way, it doesn't feel like work, but more of an adventure. In 3rd grade we write research reports, I am very familiar with teaching students everything from: what a basic sentence looks like to understanding the flow of a paragraph or essay. We build every day reading skills, from site word recognition, to decoding works and making sense of new vocabulary using context clues. I want to spread my love of reading to others, and teaching is the best way I've found how.
I love teaching, I love seeing that light bulb of understanding go off in a students head when they truly "get" something. I want to help your child grow and learn in ways that relate to them and to make their learning meaningful. I would love to connect and further discuss your expectations, goals, your students needs and interests. Please feel free to contact me to learn more and schedule a session! In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
