About Sarai

I graduated magna cum laude from the University of Maryland (UMD) in 2015. I have an associates degree in General studies and a Bachelors in Communications. I was also vice president of Communications for my school's International club. In all of my job duties, from my internship with America Reads*America Counts (AR*AC), to my current position at Connections Education, I assist in editing presentations, documents, and how-to guides.

I have tutored students in elementary school via AR*AC, middle schoolers via AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination), and my peers at UMD. I also participated in Conversation Partners at UMD wherein I met regularly with graduate students to improve their English speaking skills. Throughout my years of tutoring I have discovered the greatest indicators of growth stem from a teacher's ability to customize lesson plans and a student's willingness to ask questions.

I like to start lesson plans by asking the student what their strengths and weaknesses are and what they'd like to achieve. From there, I can begin to develop a plan that fits their needs. My lesson plans vary widely from incorporating music to writing stories. These are not the only methods I use but rather a few examples from my work in the past. I also assist in editing essays, papers, presentations, and mentoring in public speaking. Depending on what the student wants, I can work with them from start to finish of each project or meet with them to review a project.

In my personal opinion, a good lesson does not necessarily require a breakthrough. Rather, it is a matter of learning how my students learn best. As with most things, practice makes perfect but without questions a teacher does not know what may be hindering their student’s ability to learn. That is why I always encourage questions.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ESL/ESOL

In the past, I have worked with ESOL students to improve their reading and writing skills.

One program I participated in college was called "Conversation Partners." I met with ESOL students daily to go over English vocabulary, sentence structure, and writing skills.

I prefer to start off with simple sentences on familiar subjects to identify a student's specific issues. From there I customize a lesson plan that incorporates pictures and children's books.

Proofreading

I graduated from the University of Maryland with a degree in Communications. I have edited for all of my past and current jobs.

This includes:
1. Editing communications for Howard Community college via my position as a student program board chair
2. Editing trainings for the nonprofit America Reads*America Counts
3. Editing Presentations, emails, and How-To guides for Connections Education

Public Speaking

I have a Communications degree. This major relies heavily on public speaking via presentations and speeches. As the former vice-president of Communications of the International student Union at the University of Maryland I regularly gave speeches and presentations.

Reading

I have worked with students in Elementary and middle school via AR*AC (America Reads*America Counts) and AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination).

I designed lesson plans customized for each student and recorded their progress via a collection of charts.

My student and I collected books to read wherein we'd identify problems words, practice sentence structure, and study vocabulary.

Writing

I have worked with students in Elementary and middle school via AR*AC (America Reads*America Counts) and AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination).

I designed lesson plans customized for each student and recorded their progress via a collection of charts.

I first ensured my students understand sentence structure by asking them to write things they were familiar with such as a favorite place or animal. From there I would identify patterns and designed my lesson plan to improve their skillset.

Great first lesson!

Sarai helped my daughter get a grasp of her reading and outlining of Catcher in the Rye! I am confident that Sarai will be of help to my daughter as we work through the semester.
