About Humma

My life-long goal has always been to teach children – in the classroom, at home, in society at large. I focus on a core principle: each child should internalize a love of learning and seek to attain his/her highest potential. To instill this love of learning, a child should be introduced to learning opportunities at every turn, with a healthy dose of exposure to creative and interactive strategies. The best results are often derived from an organized collaborative effort among parents, teachers, students, and community.

Over the course of my life and career preparing students to be college and career ready, I have been fortunate to work for a variety of well-regarded public, private, and international schools. As a result, I have incorporated The Daily Five framework for structuring literacy time so students develop life-long habits of reading, writing, and working independently and in small groups to meet their personalized goals. This method fosters a love of literacy and improves students’ internal motivation to pursue higher education. This method can also be used in mathematical practice where students incorporate Common Core Standards through differentiated instruction, web-based lessons and games, and small group conferencing. Allowing students to integrate both math and literacy through practical applications and hands-on learning encourages a depth of learning that prepares them for college and careers. By focusing on each child’s strengths and needs through frequent and direct teacher-student communication, I have seen first-hand how students are often great teachers and can be given leadership roles that will encourage them to help others and enhance their own confidence.

In preparing students to be 21st Century Learners, I too recognize the importance of my own personal development as an educator. By pursuing professional development and continuing education classes and enrolling in a Master’s Program, I continue to expand my level of expertise in the classroom. I fully understand the importance of working collaboratively with students, staff, and parents to ensure that all students are meeting their target goals in a fun, interactive way, while fulfilling my own desire to keep abreast of the latest educational systems of instruction.

Indeed, I feel blessed to have seen the positive and lasting results of implementing my teaching philosophy over the years. I have witnessed first-hand how students that I taught were motivated to reach goals based on Student Learning Objectives and Common Core State Standards. In many cases, through my close coordination with on-grade level teams, and ESOL and special education instructors, students in my classes have demonstrated reading and writing improvements beyond established standards. Many students have frequently expressed their eagerness to have me as their teacher.

In sum, I am able to leverage my diverse, multi-cultural teaching experiences to provide an engaging classroom experience that utilizes PBIS strategies, computer technology, and differentiated instruction. It is this rich, integrative experience that I believe will enable students to develop the skills needed for future success in school and beyond.
