About Elisabet

Tutoring English is a job I love to do, incorporating the best of what I have to offer: writing and editing talent, attention to detail, and a deep abiding compassion for students, especially ESOL students. I worked in a college tutoring center for English and as an Instructional Assistant in ESOL expository composition classes at multiple levels of fluency. I attended the graduate school at University of Maryland, Baltimore County, to further my education in TESOL, where I performed with excellence, earning a Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in ESOL to complement my Bachelor's degree in English, in which I graduated with Summa Cum Laude honors.

I truly enjoy working one-on-one with students. My ESOL students at the college writing center told me that I was the most approachable and most encouraging tutor there for them, so much so that many students waited for my shift to begin to receive my help. I assist students with grammar and sentence structure, vocabulary building, cohesiveness and flow of ideas in writing; I also work with students on articulation and coaching for improved pronunciation.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

I graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English with Summa Cum Laude honors. Reading and writing are two of my favorite hobbies.I enjoy book discussions, have a love for 19th century American and English literature, but I also read contemporary novels and essays.

ESL/ESOL

Learning a language other than one's native language is not an insurmountable task, but it is a challenging task that requires constant study and extraordinary patience on the part of the student and the tutor. Patience, tenacity, and the willingness to be gentle with and forgiving of oneself, understanding that mistakes are a part of learning, will help make the challenge a more comfortable and fun as well. Second language acquisition can take years, but every step in learning is a triumph, and the learning process becomes easier with time and continually builds up the student's confidence.
