Hello and thank you for taking the time to read my profile. I am happy to introduce myself to you. I am an educator with a diverse background and teaching experience. I earned undergraduate degrees in Philosophy and Theology and masters' degrees in Linguistics and Theology. I am a certified teacher of English as a Second Language and have taught in both public schools and non-school settings.
I chose to teach English as a Second Language in order to be involved as a helper in the lives of English Language Learners. A driving force in this decision was the realization that without communicative ability in English, non-English speakers in our community will not have access to educational and professional opportunities. I therefore placed myself in a position to empower learners with knowledge and skills in English and make it easier for them to cross the bridge to exciting educational and career possibilities. And that's the reason I signed up on WyzAnt: to use my years of experience and passion as an ESL teacher to tutor learners to achieve their goal of communicating with ease in English. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
As a multilingual speaker of four languages, teaching English as a Second Language is an almost natural career option. I have added to my multilingual ability formal training in Linguistics. I have expert knowledge of the mechanism and processes involved in the acquisition of second language. As holder of Master's degree in Linguistics, and certificated teacher from the State of New Jersey, I have taught English as a Second Language/English to Speakers of Other Languages to learners in both public school settings and non-formal learning environments.
Teaching students how to read with understanding is an essential part of what I do as an English Language teacher. I have helped students to acquire skills that make them fluent readers and this inspires me to want to help more students. Through my experience as a competent Language teacher, I will help students improve their reading skills, applying strategies such as phonics, phonetic awareness, understanding of vocabulary, making connections, anticipation, and information comprehension.
