I have over ten years experience teaching and tutoring English grammar, reading comprehension, essay writing, APA formatting, ESL, and phonetics. Although my undergraduate degree (New York University) is in Fine Arts and my graduate degree (Lesley University) in Art Education, I have always loved my native language. After I graduated from college, I moved to Italy to enjoy an international experience. I worked at the Shenker Institute of English in Milan, Italy, for five years where I helped adults and teenagers master English as a second language. I eventually returned to the U.S. to raise a family. After my boys were in high school, I decided to go back to university for a master's degree. As part of my certification process, I had to take the Massachusetts MTEL (Massachusetts Tests for Educator Licensure) exams. I scored so high on the reading comprehension and writing tests that Lesley recruited me to work as a tutor at their Center for Academic Achievement. I worked on campus for five years before moving to Maryland. Three years ago, Lesley asked me to become an online tutor. I continue to help undergraduate and graduate students brainstorm, organize, write, edit, and format papers. I am proficient at using Track Changes in Microsoft. In my spare time, I enjoy writing poetry and stories. I am a published author and illustrator.

In addition to my English background, I taught drawing for five years at a private art school in Massachusetts. Having an art background is especially helpful in tutoring because the arts foster flexibility and creativity. The arts teach that there is no one right answer and that different approaches may be valid. I am familiar with Howard Gardner's multiple intelligences theory, a theory that suggests that there are many ways of being intelligent besides those normally prized by schools. I focus on students' strengths while I help them overcome their weaknesses. I offer empathy, experience and inspiration to help my students shine!

Drawing

I have taught drawing for five years to students age 5-adult at a private art school in Massachusetts. I believe that everyone can learn to draw and that all people can make art that is meaningful for them. One of the biggest secrets in the art world is that most people already know how to draw...what they might not be so good at is seeing! I don't meant that they need glasses, just experience really looking at the world around them. Learning to draw = leaning to see. I enjoy opening new visual worlds for my students through a series of fun and instructional exercises. I have an M.Ed. in Art Education from Lesley University in Cambridge, MA.
