About Sam

Hi everyone! My name is Samantha, I go by Sam. I’m a recent graduate from Washington College in Chestertown, Maryland. I am currently pursuing my Master’s degree in Psychology from Walden University, online. When I graduated from Washington College, I began working at Johns Hopkins University in Research Administration. Here, I have increased my knowledge and skills involving computers, specifically Windows. I thought I knew everything there was when it came to Microsoft Office applications, but I have learned a significant amount more over the last year or so.

I fell in love with the field of psychology, which was why majoring in it in undergrad was the best choice for me. Math and science also relate to the field of psychology and are two subjects I excel in. My SAT and GRE math score were extremely high. I have a passion for working with kids and sometimes I regret not becoming a teacher. I, as a student, used tutors through middle school to college on subjects that weren’t my favorite (history and English). I tutored and mentored elementary and middle school aged kids during my time at Washington College. My patience and willingness to help made me realize I am a great candidate for tutoring in my spare time. The kids of today are our future and I believe it starts with education… I am available to schedule lessons with all! Please contact me for more information. My schedule is pretty lenient!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Clarinet

I played clarinet from 3rd to 8th grade. Although it's been awhile, I still know the basics!

Handwriting

I am qualified to tutor in handwriting classes because I have a bachelor's degree and am pursuing my masters. I have experience with younger aged kids who are just learning how to write - being patient and advising writing techniques are helpful. I am a huge fan of the large block lined paper for younger kids, and college ruled notebook paper for high school and above - it's a good way to learn how to write in a straight line and keep your words angled correctly.

Macintosh

In my household, I grew up with Macintosh computers. I pretty much taught myself the ins and outs of all Mac technology because it was not something offered within my public schools! All through college and presently, I still use Mac computers because they are my favorite and offer a more "friendly" approach.

Microsoft Outlook

I use Microsoft Outlook every day at work for e-mails and appointment scheduling. It's an easy application to help organize personal and work related topics!

Microsoft Windows

From the time I was in elementary school, I have been using Microsoft Windows. I have taken multiple classes, even more recent, on all applications within Microsoft Windows, some of them being extremely advanced. I can type very efficiently.

Piano

From the age of 6 to 18, I played the piano. I took lessons once a week and absolutely loved it. It's something I definitely miss and wish I would have pursued longer!

Study Skills

Over the years, my study skills were lacking, but with the help of my tutors, I learned new ways (that they don't necessarily teach you in class) to study. Each person is different in their effective ways of studying, but it helps to have many of different options provided by different sources. Some people need to re-write, some people can simply re-read, others need flashcards, etc etc. I am qualified to tutor in study skills because I have taken many classes on "how to study" and have used many different techniques that sometimes need more than one person to help!
