About Angela

I love to teach; my students know it by the way that I engage them and focus on their individual needs. I've tutored for over seven years, grades K-12, in Prince George's and Howard counties. In a Christian school, I also taught high school students how to write informative papers. During the past two years, I have successfully assisted students in GED preparation, and High School Assessment (HSA) tests. Later, I developed Saturday group tutoring sessions for grades K-12.

I have experience with all types of youth, including those challenged in the following areas: ADHD, ADD and Dyslexia.

My teaching approach is encouraging students by helping to build their self-esteem and confidence in their ability to learn while assuring that their educational experiences are also fun. The lessons have proven to be effective and successful. Teachers and parents are pleased with the progress of students who are taught in sessions with me.

My specialties are these subjects: Math (K-9), Reading (K-12), Phonics, GED preparation, and Business development.

I provide one-on-one training in addition to group tutoring sessions.
My initial sessions include the following: getting to know students, listening to the needs/desires of parents and students, discussing/reviewing mutual concerns, evaluating students to determine their strengths and weaknesses, and tailoring lessons to the individual needs of each student.

After I have determined the areas that need the most attention, we begin our sessions accordingly. I teach students according to how they best learn as individuals. My belief is that it's important that you receive the most out of what you are learning to become the best that you can be. Often, many of the parents include me in the parent/teacher conferences, which ensure that we're all on one accord. The sessions can include that if considered necessary.

On June 15, 2015, my sessions will take place at a new location on Rollins Avenue in Capitol Heights, MD. It's my goal to teach in quiet areas to ensure focus and success for the students. My schedule is flexible; however, a 24 hour cancellation notice is required.

This summer I'm offering a jump start program to help your child prepare for the next grade level.

I look forward to hearing from you and helping you become a success.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

My daughter is challenged by ADHD. In 2009, in order to better understand and help her, I took classes with Children’s National Medical Center and Howard University Hospital on how to work with children and adults with ADHD/ADD. Also, in 2009, I learned how to help students stay focused while in class and during tutoring sessions. That class helped me to work effectively with my students who are challenged by ADHD/ADD. Prior to beginning our sessions, I evaluate my students to discover the most effective way they learn. Further, I always create a quiet environment by eliminating all distractions from them while working. Most importantly, I have taught them how to organize their work. Since I have implemented these steps and more, I have seen great improvement in my students’ grades.

Bible Studies

For 15 years and continuing, I studied the Bible with great intensity for clarity, and for the purpose of teaching the Word of God. I also studied under First Baptist Church of Glenarden and Cornerstone Faith Healing Church to become efficient as a teacher of the Bible. On Saturday, August 15, 2009, I was ordained as a minister by the Cornerstone Faith Healing Church. I have a unique way of teaching students how to understand the Word so that they can teach it to others as well.

Desktop Publishing

I was employed as a writer/editor in the federal government for 15 years. During those 15 years, I studied with the Federal Register that handles the layouts for federal regulations prior to being published. Also, I studied with the Government Printing Office on proper publishing formats. All of that training led me to publishing for the government as well. Later, I started my own very successful publishing company. That position required me to use my knowledge in photo editing, typography, proofreading, printing, and web page designing. Through desktop publishing, I have had the opportunity to teach many people how to properly layout manuscripts, magazines, fliers, and programs.
