Bates College (History)
For 12 of the past 16 years I have worked in various schools in the greater Washington DC metropolitan as a specialist in behavior management and as an academic supplemental services provider. I have been both a long and short term substitute teacher, and a Youth Corrections Officer as well. I have a well rounded skill set, and very cable of identifying and proficiently addressing the needs of most youth. For the last two years I have worked primarily as a stay at home father and mentor to a small group young men.
My approach to tutoring is simple. Meet students were they are, and provide the formulas and strategies to get them where they need/want to be academically. Students are the bar. In conjunction with the goals of their parents and the standards set for the state/school, we all begin the process of skill attainment, critical thinking, subject mastery, and goal achievement. I truly do believe youth can be high achievers, and I have spent the greater portion of my professional career helping youth reach those goals.
I look forward to and am honored to assist in bringing your child's higher achievement goals to fruition. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Professionally, I have over five years of experience dealing with students with ADD, ADHD, as well as other emotional and learning disabilities. My personal experience began in earnest while attending Bates College in Lewiston Maine. Beginning during the second semester of my sophomore year, I began a mentoring program for African American youth in the greater Lewiston Auburn area. Three of our initial eight youth were diagnosed with ADD. All participating mentors were trained in dealing with youth with special needs.
Professionally speaking, my first job out of college was at Boy's Town of Washington as a Youth Care Worker. There, in addition to dealing with youth diagnosed with ADD/ADHD, I was also trained to deal with a wide range of youth issues and disorders.
My most relevant work experience and training came from my employment at Foundation School of Montgomery County. It was there that I was hired as a 1:1 classroom assistant for a young man struggling with ADD and classroom behavior management. At Foundation School MC, I received training in Life Space Crisis Intervention (LSCI) and Therapeutic Aggression Control Techniques (TACT) parts I & II.
Foundation School's entire mission is to teach to the otherwise unteachable or the believed to be incorrigible.
Other related work experience that highlights my qualifications to serve as a an ADD/ADHD tutor is my time as an In-School Suspension Officer/Assistant Dean of Students at the Tree of Life Public Charter School. At TOL, I was charge with developing an in-school disciplinary system. This included incentive programs, code of conduct, and coordinating work for suspended students of various learning abilities.
As a former coach and active recreational "baller", I am very familiar with the skills, drills, and possess the basketball IQ to help ANYONE take their game to the next level and beyond. In the past I have worked with youth as young five to professional players as old as 25. My focus centers on the skill level of the student/player. Once those assessments have been made, session are built around skills that build upon strengths, strengthens weaknesses, and increases the basketball IQ.
