Hi!

I love to teach because I love knowing more about how the world works, and transitioned from wet bench biochemical research to education so that my students could have a taste of what that exploration is like. For seven years, I've taught 6th-9th grade general science, biology, and chemistry. My time was split between both public and private schools in New York City and Washington, DC. Between being a TA in college and tutoring professionally, I also have over eight years of tutoring experience (primarily in math).

My focus is always on making sure a student has a strong foundation in basic concepts - whether this is number theory, fractions/decimals, or basic biology. I want you (or your child) to understand WHY the math works more than simply knowing a set procedure to follow. Most obstacles and confusion that we face are because of a missing piece in this foundation. Let's discover what that is and strengthen it, so that you can be off and running toward success!

My professional strengths are in the biological sciences and general chemistry, but I'm happy to work with students in a general science curriculum (this includes basic chemistry and physics). If the annual science fair is an occasion of dread, please reach out and let's get started in time for you to have an awesome project! I also tutor all secondary levels of math, from pre-algebra through pre-calculus. I am particularly comfortable with those who are test anxious, or who have never felt like math or science are their strong suits.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions before reserving a session. I look forward to working with you, and celebrating your many successes!

WyzAnt approved for Elementary Math, Prealgebra, Algebra 1, and Reading/Vocab (which can impact mathematical understanding). Working contractually with the NYC Department of Education, I tutored pre-Algebra through Algebra 2/Trig. I have tutored my own science students to supplement gaps in foundational math discovered through their work in my classes.

Regents

I taught Regents level Living Environment during my tenure as a New York City public school teacher. I am familiar with both the classroom curriculum as well as the required lab components that students are accountable for on the exam. In addition, I taught after-school and Saturday Regents review classes as well as graded the completed exams. While my professional familiarity is with the Living Environment Regents, I am also comfortable helping students review for the Earth Science Regents.

Teen daughter gave Rebecca five stars!

Rebecca explained Algebra 2 material well, she was warm, supportive, and matched my daughter’s learning style. My daughter is a tough client, and she gave Rebecca a rave review!

Very knowledgable and caring tutor

Recent unit in Chemistry and Algebra II. Rebecca is very caring and a terrific tutor, and strong at communicating with the student and parents. I would very highly recommend her!

Great Tutor!

Rebecca has been tutoring my daughter with Algebra I. This class moves very quickly, and my daughter started falling behind quickly. Rebecca has been an awesome tutor and comes weekly to help keep my daughter on track. My daughter really enjoys her nurturing and kind approach, and can freely state when she does not understand a concept. Also, flexible with scheduling!

Rebecca and her amazing skills as a tutor

Rebecca is a top notch tutor, she is very intuitive at picking out my sons weak spots that are holding him back in math. With her help I feel he is able to overcome his fear and succeed.

Excellent, knowledgeable, approachable, patient.

Rebecca is outstanding. Not only is she knowledgeable in both chemistry and algebra, she is patient and methodical in her approach. She took the time to find out where the gaps were in my son's knowledge base and continues to work through and reinforce those concepts. My son seems to really connect with her and feels comfortable without being intimidated. I'm in ear shot the entire time since I'm in the kitchen and they're in the dining room. I'm amazed and grateful she's there to reinforce these skills. We should have started with her last year!

Creative, innovative, patient, and loving to her students

Rebecca was amazing with my 11-year old daughter. She has calmly and creatively gone through some of the basic theories/principles in pre-algebra (as well as in Chemistry) that my daughter was really struggling with and helped her understand them in a way that empowers her to tackle the next steps in each of these subjects. My daughter is at a very intense middle-school, and it is so magical to see her face brighten after a session with Rebecca, because she's armed with newfound knowledge, comprehension, understanding, and most importantly confidence. And she likes science again (we are still working on her feelings for math...baby steps). Rebecca offers all the ingredients you want in an ideal tutor and teacher....I tell her she has become our guardian angel, because I was honestly running out of options for how best to help my daughter and watching her struggle was torturous. I recommend Rebecca unequivocally, my only reservation being the more popular she becomes, the less time she'll have available for my kiddo.

Rebecca is excellent in more ways than just tutoring, she really gets kids

Rebecca can target in exactly what my daughter needs, not wasting a minute reviewing things my daughter already understands. She also asks me to send her a copy of the homework, the review sheets, or test prep sheets BEFORE she comes to tutor, so she can review the work herself and make sure she has a good understanding of what my daughter is getting and where she needs help. She is just amazing. She is also a calm and steady presence, and weaves in lots of pep talk in a subtle way, because she is aware that a lot of times my daughter understands the math, but she not feeling confident. I think working with Rebecca has not only brought her math grades up to an A, BUT it's really significantly improved my daughter's self esteem - which is enormous. The self esteem improvement has spread naturally to ALL OTHER CLASSES! and now she is getting better grades in everything, not just what Rebecca is tutoring her about. I am truly grateful to have found this tutor. She is also very flexible with her time. I highly recommend her (although she is very busy! i am hesitant to rave so much because she is often hard to schedule she is so good an in such high demand).

Great Algebra tutor!

Rebecca has been a tremendous help to my daughter who was struggling with Algebra. She's much more confident and is doing really well. I highly recommend Rebecca!

Paula, 2 lessons with Rebecca

She's wonderful!

My daughter, who hardly ever likes anything or anyone, said after her last lesson "I really like her." She's like a Renaissance tutor, covering math, science and French.
