I have always been a lover of science and the arts. Since I am passionate about both, I strive to learn and practice science and art on a daily basis. I have been lucky to have experienced an amazing academic career in both biological sciences and in fine art, and I hope to share my experience with anyone who is interested in studying these topics. I love working with students of all ages and can tailor my lessons to any age group with ease. In kindergarten, we were all scientists, artists, and anything else we wanted to be. My goal is to reignite that flame in all learners.
As for science, I received my B.A degree from Lehigh University in molecular biology. After completing my own research on photolyase enzymes in bacteria, I decided that microbiology and immunology were my bag. I went on to do a summer internship at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in the helminth immunology division, learning the amazing ability of parasites to evade the human immune response. The internship led to acceptance into Emory University's Immunology and Molecular Pathogenesis Program, where I completed my Ph.D. After taking a break from bench research to raise a family, I now teach Biology at Allegany College of Maryland.
My studies in art began and continue in painting. As a double major, I also have a B.A. degree in Theatre from Lehigh University. Instead of pursuing a degree in fine art, a freshman seminar in scenic painting gave me the "theatre bug" and convinced me to go into Theatre. At Lehigh, I started work as a scene painter in the Diamond Theatre, and eventually became the charge scenic artist for all of the Diamond Theatre's productions. I also have considerable experience as a costume designer. As a scenic artist, one is required to know and possess the skill to emulate all styles of art and design, from Rembrandt to Monet to NYC graffiti. Thus, my training has given me knowledge both in fine art and in art history. My honors thesis was done in the Theatre Department, where I painted a series of 4' x 8' paintings based on the works of such artists as Singer-Sergeant, Cezanne, Kalf, and Parrish. Since graduating from Lehigh, I have completed many commissioned pieces, murals, and have started a shop displaying my art for sale on Etsy.com.
I hope we can learn together soon! Hello!

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
