About Eliza

Hi there! My name is Eliza and I am a recent graduate from Covenant College with a bachelor's degree in sociology. A portion of my degree was completed at the University of Oxford in Oxford, UK. During my time abroad I studied literature, psychology, and church history. By participating in Oxford’s tutorials, I learned the importance of knowing what I believe and how to express that on paper. I also learned to view failure as a starting point, and discovered the benefits of making bold decisions. Oxford is, without a doubt, my greatest academic achievement.

That being said, I understand first-hand just how overwhelming school can be at times. Getting poor grades is disappointing, especially for students who are working hard but not seeing the results that they'd hoped for. I want to encourage your student to persevere despite feelings of frustration and doubt. My hope is that they will grow through trial and error, treating education as a learning experience instead of allowing themselves to be overcome by the fear of failure. Every student has potential; and with a little direction and plenty of time, effort, and encouragement, I believe any student can improve their grades and develop confidence in the classroom.

A bit more about me:
During high school, I was a member of the National Honor Society. I was voted Most Likely to Become President by my peers, and nominated for Most Congenial. I have taken both the AP Literature and AP Language exams. I earned A's in all of my Oxford tutorials and graduated from Covenant College cum laude. I have ample experience writing and proofreading high school and college-level essays. I would love to talk to anyone who is interested in studying abroad.

I am patient, compassionate, enthusiastic, and confident; I am ready to serve and love others well by listening, motivating, and encouraging the discouraged. If you would like further information about any of my experiences or skills please feel free to contact me at your earliest convenience.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Handwriting

As I child, I took handwriting classes (both in school and with a private tutor) that allowed me to refine my penmanship early in life. I was taught both print and cursive, and have perfected my style over time. From what I have observed, the key to beautiful handwriting lies in how you grip the pen/pencil. Your grip determines your control, the angle at which you write, the amount of pressure you apply to the paper, etc. Once you learn to grip your pen/pencil properly, you can begin practicing your lettering. Younger children may need to review basic letter formation; but older students will most likely benefit from repetition and developing self-control. Artistry comes later, once lettering is fluid and done without thought (i.e. when handwriting is completely natural instead of forced). That being said, the ultimate goal is to help students improve their print and/or cursive by emphasizing clarity first, flourishes second. Legibility is the top priority.

Proofreading

I have ample experience proofreading high school and college-level essays. I correct grammar, spelling, punctuation, etc. and will make recommendations regarding sentence/paragraph structure and the overall organization and flow of your paper. I am very familiar with APA and can help with in-text citations and formatting reference pages.

Study Skills

Knowing what to study is the first step towards academic achievement; knowing how to study is the second step. Organization is key. If a student cannot identify what needs to be reviewed, then they have no way of properly preparing for exams. Developing an organizational system (i.e. filing loose papers, color coding notes, tracking assignments, keeping a calendar, etc.) is an essential prerequisite. Once organization has been achieved, students can then determine through trial and error which study skills work best for them. Some students excel using alternative memorization techniques (For example, I learned French in college by writing, erasing, and rewriting phrases on dry erase boards; I used acronyms to memorize my geology notes). Others excel using more traditional methods such as flashcards, outlines, homemade tests, review sheets, etc. Every student is different. The goal is finding what "sticks". Once a student learns what works/what doesn't work, they can then apply those skills to the different subjects they're taking and build a study plan for each course.

Writing

I encourage anyone who is struggling with writing to begin by breaking their largest task into smaller, more manageable goals. Many writers benefit from outlining and organizing their thoughts; I work alongside students to create outlines that highlight the key points they hope to make in their essay. My preferred method is the note card method, which allows students to collect their thoughts and research first, and then organize the information they have gathered into the paper (determining where the information would best fit: in the introduction, body paragraphs, or conclusion). Once the outline is prepared, I walk students through the process of building a strong introduction and thesis that they will then support throughout their essay. I am very familiar with MLA and APA formatting, and can help any students struggling with in-text citations and references.

Very Personable and encouraging!

We have had one session with Eliza and my son seemed to really enjoy practicing and learning cursive with her. We will be continuing with more sessions to help him to stay in his defined letter/word/paragraph spaces as well as write faster than he can with printing so he can keep up with the more intense middle school demands for note taking and writing responses.
