About John

Hello!

I am an experienced multilingual teacher and professor who teaches the useful combination of English as a Second Language, combined with expertise in Western culture and philosophy. No subject too "large" for either the native or non-native English student. My background spans 5 academic degrees, including: theoretical and applied linguistics, philosophy, theology, and literature.

In addition, I have a command of multiple languages: English, German, Spanish, Latin, French, and Russian!

My prevailing goal is to always provide a patient and understanding approach to helping students learn language, regardless of its form! My technique is a patient and scientifically-informed approach to both grammatical and reading acquisition; both beginning developmental and/or ESOL students as well as advanced English speakers can benefit from my multilevel approach to gradual language learning!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Bible Studies

I have a Master's in Christian theology, specializing in the relationship of hermeneutics to Near Eastern cosmology and its effects on biblical archaeology.

My investigations in Scripture relate the mythological and psychological dimensions of fundamentalism as it bears on Scriptural interpretation.

My practical work lies in youth ministry (mainly as a teacher) and how practical Christian moral theology bears on the ethics of everyday living, using the NT as a guideline.

Philosophical and theological preparation:

B.A. Philosophy, University of MD
M.Th., Systematic Theology, Washington Theological Union
Postgrad coursework in philosophy, Virginia Tech

Additional degrees in theoretical linguistics

I am now pursuing a PhD in Education.

Dutch

My B.A. in linguistics focused on comparative Germanic languages and the syntactic analyses of their grammars. I picked-up Dutch along the way, and would like to share my knowledge of the language of the Netherlands!

*Further work in theoretical and Germanic linguistics (M.A., George Mason University)

English

I am a trained K-12 English, ESOL teacher, and philosophy professor who has worked extensively with developmental students. I am an applied linguist conversant in 6 languages and specializing in applied grammar.

ESL/ESOL

I am a Roman theologian who works in bilingual education. I am also an applied linguist (MIT school) who is conversant in Spanish. I have an EXTENSIVE knowledge of English morphology and syntax, and if you cannot get my lesson in English, I will give it you in Spanish!

German

I am a theoretical and applied linguist who has studied German for 34 years; German is my second language.

Latin

Former Latin teacher who has studied Latin from a scientific linguistic and classicist perspectives. Guaranteed to get results because I am an expert in English grammar whose avocation is getting students to learn from a linguist's point-of -view.

I recommend 2-3 times per week, one hour per day, but we can work something out!

Also a Roman Catholic Educational Minister who has gone to MANY masses--all in Latin!

I even understand them! lol :)

Logic

I have teaching experience as an adjunct professor of philosophy, and have taken multiple courses in both informal and symbolic logic.

Moreover, I am a scientific linguist who specialized in formal semantic analysis of natural language grammars.

I wish to use my training in logic to further assist students in philosophy and religion.

Phonics

I am a scientific linguist who had specialized in the phonological and syntactic processing of real-time reading.

I am trained in both holistic and segmental approaches to morphophonemic parsing of words in real-time, and how linguistic scaffolding of words with concepts augments phonics students with their reading skills.

B.A. & M.A. Theoretical Linguistics

Praxis

I too have gone through the vicissitudes of this exam. Fortunately, I scored a Praxis composite of 532 for all three areas, making me eligible for teaching anywhere in the United States.

In addition, I am pursuing a PhD in Education, as it has long been my desire to assist teachers--particularly in the area of ESOL Education/Applied Linguistics--in their vocational and general career growth.

Psychology

I am a trained linguist who has worked with general cognitive science form a philosophical perspective. At my level there is no distinction between psychology and cognition form a linguistics point of view.

I am patient and I can work with you steadily, giving you insight into both psychology and sociology.
