About Meira

Dear Parents and Students,
I love teaching. Ever since I was in the 6th grade I have wanted to be a teacher. I graduated from Towson University in December 2014, with a Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education. I have also taken Praxis I and Praxis II, which are the tests that are required to become a certified teacher. I live to teach. I love to teach.

I have taught 3rd grade and 1st grade in Harford County, Maryland. Before that I did internships in 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades. I briefly taught in the classroom professionally with 1st and 2nd grade students who have special needs. This experience taught me that I prefer to work one-on-one with students. I find it hard to focus on and effectively teach 25 students or even 5 students, all at the same time, especially when most of those students need individual attention. I have worked with every subject in every grade and I continue to keep myself up to date.

Games are my favorite way to teach. I always look for something fun to spice up a lesson. One of my favorite things aside from teaching is learning. If you have something to show or share with me, it will likely brighten my day. In my opinion, great students make even better teachers. While I am new to tutoring, I do have a lot of experience working one-on-one with students. The last thing I would like to share with you for now is that I never give up. I love a good challenge. If you show me something that I do not know or understand, I will tell you that I do not know, and then I will do whatever I need to do to find the answer. Patience and perseverance are key to teaching and learning.

Math is one subject that I struggled with for a long time, but I learned to love it. In college I took numerous elementary math classes that focused on Common Core math. I find Common Core math to be frustrating to students, but I greatly enjoy showing them why it makes sense and how it can be applied to real life (if it can be).

Writing is one of my favorite hobbies. The best part about writing is that you can write about anything you want. Of course in school you are often given something to write about, but there is always a way to make it your own. However, in order for writing to make any sense, one needs to have a strong understanding of grammatical practices. I have taught the basics of grammar, such as the structure of a basic sentence, to the more advanced elementary grammar, such as the structure of a paragraph. The best way to learn grammar is to write about something you want to write about.

Every class I took in college, every book I read about school, and every classroom I taught in was focused on Common Core. I have found that Common Core is always changing, but I try to keep myself up to date at all times. I often look over the Common Core Standards, as well as the Common Core curriculum materials to see what is new, and refresh myself on things I have seen before.

As I said before, I have worked in every elementary grade classrooms. I have taught every subject in each grade. I went to Towson University and majored in Elementary Education. I have also worked in a special education classroom, so I have experience with modifying work to fit the needs of a student. I also know that young students have a hard time sitting still for a whole hour, so we will make sure to stretch and move when we need to.

My heart tells me everyday that I am a teacher. It took me some time to figure out what kind of teacher I wanted to be, but now I know that tutoring is what I want to do. If there is anything else you would like to know, feel free to contact me. I can not wait to speak with you and learn more about you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have a Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education, and I have taken Praxis I and Praxis II. I student taught 1st, 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades. I professionally taught 1st and 2nd grade special education students. I like to use games, songs, and videos to make learning more fun.

Elementary Math

I have work in every grade with math. Right now I am tutoring a soon to be 5th grader in math, so I have a number of resources available for your child.

Handwriting

I worked with 1st graders using handwriting workbooks. They would have to copy words and sentences, exactly, in their best handwriting. I also worked with older special education students by doing word outlines, dotted lines, and copying.

Study Skills

In school, I worked on the best ways to study for tests. Whether it was using textbook notes, creating study guides, flash cards, songs, or pictures, I have learned that every student needs a different way to study. I have various techniques and sources to help a student learn study skills.
