About Lisa

I am currently an 8th grade English honors teacher. I have been a teacher for over 20 years and have taught most of those at the high school level. In addition, I have experience teaching GED prep and remedial English at all levels as well as SAT reading and writing, college essay writing, proofreading, and writing in response to literature,

I believe in meeting students where they are and moving them forward. I am patient and nurturing and have high expectations for every learner I work with. I use diverse strategies and techniques, for I believe that each learner is unique and processes and learns differently.

I require a 3 hour cancellation notice, and my schedule is flexible on most days and after 5 P.M. Most weekends are open as well.

I look forward to working with you and your child.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

I have been an English teacher for over 20 years, teaching mostly at the high school level. For the past two years, I have been an advanced academic 8th grade language arts teacher.

Grammar

Grammar is a significant skill that I teach daily in my language arts 8th grade class, especially when focusing on writing skills. They go hand in hand.

Literature

I am an advanced academic 8th grade language arts teacher who teaches students to critically read and analyze literary fiction and non fiction as well as poetry.

Proofreading

I have lots of experience proofreading and with essay writing. I teach essay writing in my day job and proofread a lot for family and friends.

Reading

Because I am a language arts teacher, reading is an important component to what I do each day. I teach main idea, summarizing and comprehension skills.

Vocabulary

As a language arts teacher, vocabulary is crucial to students' reading comprehension as well as writing skills. I focus on vocabulary in context as well as synonyms and antonyms in my classroom.

Writing

I am a middle school language arts teacher and teach writing skills from sentence structure to grammar and punctuation as well as organizational skills and essay writing.
