About Tom

I know how frustrating it can be when you just aren't "getting it" in Calculus or Physics. Your son or daughter are doing everything they can on their own, getting help from the teacher after class, and even putting in extra time studying after class or on weekends. But for whatever reason homework still takes hours, the material doesn't stick, and their test grades just aren't where you'd like them to be.

Hi, my name is Tom, and I'm a Math and Physics tutor for high school and college students.

Back in 2006, just before starting at UMD's Clark School of Engineering, I was able to earn 5's on both the Calculus AB/BC, and Physics Mechanics and E&M AP exams. And by the time I graduated in 2010 with degrees in both Mechanical Engineering and Philosophy, I was able to earn a 3.9 GPA, Cum Laude honors, and Departmental Honors in engineering, all while working internships, doing undergrad research, and keeping my sanity (and social life).

Bottom line? I know what it takes to earn top grades in Calc and Physics courses, learn the material so that it sticks long-term, and do it all without studying your entire life away at the library each week.

So I do things a little differently than most tutors. The last thing an already-stressed teenager needs is more work on top of their assignments for class, and another authority figure lecturing them. Instead, I work with students to help them get through their classwork and learn the material, while at the same time preparing them to ace exams, earn A.P. credit, and get ready for the rigors of a college education - all with time left over to still enjoy being a kid.

If you're interested in working with me, shoot me an email. I'll send over some additional information about my service.

I also would be happy to meet with you, at your convenience, for a free consultation to sketch out how I can help your son or daughter get back on track and finally start to "get it."

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Calculus

I have 5+ years of tutoring experience in calculus and calculus-related subjects.

Calculus became one of my favorite subjects back in high school, where I was able to earn 5's on both the AB and BC calculus AP exams back in 2005 and 2006.

I also graduated with honors from University of Maryland, College Park in 2009 with a B.S. degree in mechanical engineering, with a large portion of that curriculum dealing with the application of fundamental mathematics concepts.

Mechanical Engineering

I graduated from the University of Maryland, College Park with a B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering in 2009. I earned a 3.91 GPA and graduated Cum Laude with Departmental Honors in Engineering.

I have tutored students in Intro to Engineering, Statics, Mechanics of Materials, Dynamics, and Thermodynamics engineering courses.

I also have 5+ years experience as an engineer and engineering manager in the manufacturing industry.

Physics

I have 5+ years of tutoring experience in Physics and Physics-related subjects.

Physics became one of my favorite subjects back in High School, where I was able to earn 5's on both the Mechanics and Electricity & Magnetism Physics AP exams in 2006.

I also graduated with honors from University of Maryland, College Park in 2009 with a B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering, with a large portion of that curriculum dealing with the application of fundamental Physics concepts.

Precalculus

I have 5+ years of tutoring experience in calculus and calculus-related subjects.

Calculus became one of my favorite subjects back in high school, where I was able to earn 5's on both the AB and BC calculus AP exams back in 2005 and 2006. I also tutored students in algebra and pre-calculus as a member of National Honors Society.

I graduated with honors from University of Maryland, College Park in 2009 with a B.S. degree in mechanical engineering, with a large portion of that curriculum dealing with the application of fundamental mathematics concepts.

Statistics

I have 5+ years of tutoring experience in a variety of different math subjects, including Statistics. In 2009 I graduated with honors from University of Maryland, College Park with a B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering, with a large portion of that curriculum dealing with the collection, analysis, and interpretation of data using statistics. I also have 5 years of direct experience applying statistical principles in a manufacturing/business setting, and am a certified Six Sigma Black Belt.

The best calculus tutor ever! — Tom helped my daughter so much with AP calculus. He is very patient and good at explaining difficult concepts and he really prepared her to take the AP exam. He also has a nice, laid back personality and is very responsible and responsive. We first tried other tutors who charged less and were closer to where we live but Tom was well worth the travel time and I consider the money well spent. My dau ...
