The study of music and its applications should always be enjoyable. As it has been said that music is the soundtrack of our lives. I am in agreement, as these melodic variations are often displays of our joys and heartbreaks. Everyone should have music as an intricate part of life. After all, we are surrounded by it with each step we take in our experiences. For me, having studied music and musical theory for twenty plus years, written thirteen plus compositions, as well as finished an eight year tenure as a pianist for my congregation, I have learned to appreciate the rich diversity found in music.

As a current instructor, I work with a variety of people, ranging in age from seven to seventy. Each individual has a certain style of learning, with strengths in one or two particular areas. With every person I instruct, I like to assess those strengths and then apply them in various strategies to enhance a student’s understanding of their weaker areas. A person that is rhythmically sound, but weak with note recognition, can be taught how to use their rhythmic gift in various patterns to learn and memorize specific notes, chords and intervals. Some would say this is too simple or "easier said than done" and both statements could be accurate. However, just as any industry has multiple branches, there are equally as many branches of musical learning as there are rhythmic patterns.

Studying music can be a challenge, but it does not have to be painful or boring! If you are willing, lets work together to discover and fine tune your individual sound!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Music Theory

To help students become more comfortable with the technical aspects of music.

Piano

I have 23 years of study in classical piano, with 4 years of teaching piano to people of various backgrounds. Receiving instruction in styles from the baroque period to the 20th century, each individual expresses their own musical interest which I enjoy helping them to develop. When assessing their strengths, I require the students to apply that knowledge in multiple ways, adding to the enhancement of their learning experience.
