I have been teaching EFL and tutoring ESL since 2008, and I really love it and my students. No matter where in the world I am, from South Korea to Saudi Arabia to the United States, my goal is always to help my students reach their goals through a communicative approach. What better way to learn how to use a language than to start using it? I have worked with students on all four skills, speaking, listening, reading, and writing on both an informal and academic level. Whether you want to improve your conversation and pronunciation skills, or write killer term papers, I can get you on the right track. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have four years experience teaching ESOL. My first year was spent living in Daegu, South Korea, teaching English to students age 3-adult - some of whom had never been exposed to the English language before. I taught basic to advanced level students with grammar, reading, writing, and oral exercises. I also conducted classes in manners and Western culture. During my second year, I taught German natives who had relocated to Lancaster, Pa. These students were advanced to intermediate level, and a lot of focus was placed on grammar, word placement, and pronunciation. I have taught college prep classes in Saudi Arabia at Princess Nora Bint Abdulrahman University, and undergraduate courses at Sylhet International University in Sylhet, Bangladesh. I am also a teacher trainer. Whatever your ESOL needs, I am sure I can assist!
Grammar is everyone's dreaded subject, but I have plenty of experience teaching this, too. When it is integrated with basic skills instruction in a communicative framework, it makes a lot more sense! I will put your grammar instruction into a context that makes it more interesting to you.
I have a master's degree in Teaching English as a Second Language and have taken courses in linguistics and second language acquisition that focus directly on phonics and pronunciation. Phonics is especially important for those of you struggling with your accent.
I've worked as a literary magazine editor and have graded piles of papers from elementary to university level students. I'd be happy to add your work to the list.
As a student, I was a member of my school's Forensics Team, a public speaking club, and competed at the national level. I have taken courses on public speaking, am a teacher, and have served in several leadership positions that require a good deal of public speaking.
Many students have a hard time concentrating while they read or remembering what they've read once they're finished. I'll offer a variety of pre-, during-, and post-reading activities that make reading more enjoyable and memorable, allowing students to make the most of each reading experience.
Many students have a hard time concentrating while they read or remembering what they've read once they're finished. These are especially important skills for the reading portion of the SAT. I'll offer a variety of pre-, during-, and post-reading activities that will boost academic reading skills to make SAT Reading accessible and ensure your success.
Writing takes a lot of practice, especially academic writing for the SAT! I scored extremely well on the written portion of the SAT and GRE and would be happy to teach you some writing tips that you can use to improve your writing, no matter what level you are currently at.
As a language instructor of a preparatory year program at Princess Nora University in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, I understand just how necessary it is to teach and acquire excellent study skills in order to be successful in your academics. I am fully prepared to teach you the strategies you can apply along with the skills you already have to be a successful student and test taker.
Lack of vocabulary makes communicating at work or school and scoring well on academic tests nearly impossible. I am experienced at teaching vocabulary retention skills to beginning - advanced level learners, and with a little practice, you'll be expanding your vocabulary in no time.
