About Kathy

I have been teaching EFL/ESL since 2008 to students of all ages. No matter where in the world I am, from South Korea to Saudi Arabia to the United States, my goal is always to help my students reach their goals through a communicative approach. What better way to learn how to use a language than to start using it? I have worked with students on all four skills, speaking, listening, reading, and writing on both an informal and academic level. Whether you want to improve your conversation and pronunciation skills, or write killer term papers, I can get you on the right track. I have been teaching EFL/ESL since 2008 to students of all ages. Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

I have a Master's Degree in Teaching English as a Second Language, and eight years of teaching experience.

ESL/ESOL

I have been teaching ESOL to learners of all ages since 2008. I have worked in South Korea, Saudi Arabia, Bangladesh, Russia, and the United States. I currently work as an ESL instructor at a local community college where I teach college students and adults English classes in grammar, writing, speaking and listening, and reading.

Grammar

Grammar is everyone's dreaded subject, but I have plenty of experience teaching it. I will put your grammar instruction into a context that makes it more interesting to you, and I'll patiently explain complex topics in simple, approachable ways until you catch on. You'll have plenty of opportunities to practice grammar in the contexts that you need.

Proofreading

I've worked as a literary magazine editor and have graded piles of papers from elementary to university level students. I'd be happy to add your work to the list.

Reading

Many students have a hard time concentrating while they read or remembering what they've read once they're finished. I'll offer a variety of pre-, during-, and post-reading activities that make reading more enjoyable and memorable, allowing students to make the most of each reading experience. I'll also prepare students with a toolkit of reading strategies they can go forward with independently.

Vocabulary

Lack of vocabulary makes communicating at work or school and scoring well on academic tests nearly impossible. I am experienced at teaching vocabulary retention skills to beginning - advanced level learners, and with a little practice, you'll be expanding your vocabulary in no time.

Writing

I have an MA TESOL, BA English (Magna Cum Laude), and a superior rating on the WPT. I teach writing professionally to college students and adults, and I'd love to help you whether you're struggling with the basics or working on something more complex.
