About Essien

My name is Essien, I'm 29 years of age. I studied Economics and minored in French at the University of Maryland during my undergraduate years. I went to Paint Branch High School in Burtonsville (Silver Spring) where I represented my school in varsity soccer and swimming. I've been a tutor for over year, and got my beginning at a math tutoring center. There I tutored math (algebra, geometry, arithmetic, and SAT math) to middle and high school students. I also taught English, particularly writing and reading for SAT preparation. I currently tutor privately, teaching a 6th grader math through this calendar year.

I've always been a good communicator, and good at empathizing with others which is what I think makes me very good at teaching. I'm also patient, and have become a better listener over the last year plus that I've been teaching. I enjoy helping people improve their understanding and gain a greater appreciation for education.

I minored in French as part of my undergraduate years at University of Maryland. I'm good with grammar, writing with style, and translations (English to French, and vice versa) due to the courses I took. I studied French from my high school freshman year. Except for two years where I studied German, I've studied from my freshman year of high school to my senior year of college.

I'm very good at reading, writing with style, and sentence completion. I got a 550 high of 800 in my SAT but have become a significantly better writer and at comprehending reading, aroused by my further education.

I'm patient, attentive, and full of empathy. I can relate to struggling students because I've been in their shoes; I know the feeling of being unable to make sense of coursework and understand how to help one reach understanding through various avenues.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
