About Mary

I am a teacher that loves working with students and have taught K-12 for 13 plus years. I work to awaken students' passion for learning by exposing them to strategies and skills to get them to perform and become successful learners; through use of research and become critical thinkers to build their interest and productivity. I love to awaken the AHA moments in students to get them to realize and build their confidence that; "Yes, I can do it"!

I use prior knowledge, to get the students to see reading as real life experiences. To develop interest and try to break down the stories to sections that helps them to navigate the complex nature of reading. It now brings understanding, and we begin to work on the grammar, parts of speech, and punctuations. Also, write down steps with predictions that makes writing/narratives come naturally.

With my training and a heart that all students are teachable and can do great things, I will do my best and beyond to meet the needs of all my students. For students with learning disabilities, there are interventions like Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) and data keeping to evaluate their progress like Discrete Trial Training (DTT) and the re-teaching model. I am a good listener and have time within my schedule to be there for my students and can be reached through the set-up format of WzyAnt.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Autism

I have a non categorical license to teach K-12 SPECIAL Education in District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS) due to my training from College at Trinity University with MAT, Special Education. I also passed a teacher certification Exams, the Praxis II on disabilities, Autism inclusive. I utilized the Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) intervention and the Discrete Trial Training (DTT) evaluation methods, with parental support that helped my students to reach their potential, as they improve socially significant behavior to a meaningful degree.
