I use prior knowledge, to get the students to see reading as real life experiences. To develop interest and try to break down the stories to sections that helps them to navigate the complex nature of reading. It now brings understanding, and we begin to work on the grammar, parts of speech, and punctuations. Also, write down steps with predictions that makes writing/narratives come naturally.
With my training and a heart that all students are teachable and can do great things, I will do my best and beyond to meet the needs of all my students. For students with learning disabilities, there are interventions like Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) and data keeping to evaluate their progress like Discrete Trial Training (DTT) and the re-teaching model. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have a non categorical license to teach K-12 SPECIAL Education in District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS) due to my training from College at Trinity University with MAT, Special Education. I also passed a teacher certification Exams, the Praxis II on disabilities, Autism inclusive. I have taught and helped my two students with Asperger meet their academic goals and were successful interacting with their peers for 2 school years. I utilized the Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) intervention and the Discrete Trial Training (DTT) evaluation methods, with parental support that helped my students to reach their potential, as they improve socially significant behavior to a meaningful degree.
I graduated in May 2001 with an Masters of Arts in Teaching (MAT), Special Education from Trinity University, Washington, DC. I have taught special education for 14 years in District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS) and 3 years in Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS). With my caseload and students in my classroom, I have been privilege to teach and work with students with specific learning disabilities, emotional disturbance, intellectually disabled, speech impairment, Autism, and some other health impairment students with ADHD or multiple disabilities.
