About Laveen

I am a Professor Emeritus who was given that distinction when I retired from my last university professorship. Many of my former students have achieved great prominence in their careers. Since retirement I have mentored several 9th and 10th grade students without charge from local high schools such as Poolesville H.S. and Mt. Hebron H.S. A teacher told me that my mentoring of one of the students had been responsible for changing him from a shy, hard to reach student into a confident participant willing to interact with his teachers and peers. I like mentoring students and adults of all ages and miss the interaction with students. That is the only reason I am looking into the possibility of undertaking some tutoring through WyzAnt.

What I love about tutoring and mentoring students is the difference I have been able to make in their understanding of the subjects they considered very difficult and the confidence they gain from my mentoring and tutoring. The biggest problem in Math teaching is that it is often taught by people who do not have the patience to break down something that seems obvious to them into a detailed step by step presentation where each step logically follows from the previous one and there are no gaps or jumps which leave the student at a loss. All I ask from a student is that he/she is really wanting to learn and willing to do the practice exercises or projects.

I taught freshmen at the University level at three universities these Math topics for many years. I would be pleased to respond to questions from individuals about their personal requirements and tutoring needs.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
