My International Relations major also afforded me the opportunity to learn another language. As a sophomore I began to learn Brazilian Portuguese. In the fall of my junior year, I furthered my language study with a study abroad in Rio de Janeiro, BR for 5 months. While in Brazil, I gained proficiency inside and outside the classroom with the help of local Cariocas. Their methods are the same methods I employ when I tutor people taking Portuguese. In addition to my language skills, I also have knowledge of various regions of Brazil (Sao Paulo, Manaus, Salvador, Rio de Janeiro, and Minas Gerais) and understand the cultural contexts of these regions. Cultural context is very important as it often explains peculiarities in vocabulary and syntax.
My teaching method is focused on latent immersion. In addition to vocabulary and conjugations, I will offer tips to help you rapidly learn new vocabulary and verbs with their correct conjugations. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
