Philosophy

I believe that there are significant gaps being left for many students that do not have a natural propensity towards math in both public and private school education. Math is a system of building blocks, and when students do not get the opportunity to master the foundational concepts, it typically comes to a head by 5th grade, if not sooner. I believe that ALL students can be successful with math as long as those gaps are identified and addressed effectively, and there is a constant focus on mastery to prevent those gaps from occurring in the future.

Approach

My approach / style is flexible and tailored to each individual student as well as the goals identified / mutually agreed upon between parents and myself, in order to create an effective learning plan. Student confidence in math is obtained by a focus on mastery, which can be identified by speed and accuracy. Mastery typically involves significant repetition (as well as daily focus), however, I try to mix it up with a variety of workbooks, online exercises and games, apps that can be used on mobile devices, as well as active, hands-on engagement. MATH IS FUN. All students should experience that!

Experience

Parent to a current 5th grader who is currently testing on a 7th grade level and operates at the top of his class. My thoughts on the importance of confidence in math stems primarily from observations of him, once I began to heavily tutor him to ensure mastery. The various math programs that have been used at his school had been extremely scattered, leaving significant gaps and moving at a pace where it was impossible for students to grasp. Our focus over the last 2 years has been to work on mastering true building blocks in parallel to understanding the extremely complex Common Core Math. Most importantly (and most proudly), he identifies math as his favorite subject.

In 2015-2016 School Year, I tutored 8th grader for 2 months that was significantly behind due to the poor foundation. She was able to get to a comfortable level to proceed independently.

Have informally tutored students with individual concepts between 4th and 9th grades, ranging from multiplication mastery to algebra.

Have worked with kids ages 8-14 for the last 5 years as a cheerleading coach. Have a strong passion for instilling / enforcing excellence, discipline, and pushing yourself.

I have the following qualifications: 760 Math SAT Score, Valedictorian in Elementary / Middle / High Schools, worked at an advanced level in Math during formative years (Algebra I – 7th Grade, Geometry – 8th Grade, Algebra II / Trigonometry – 9th Grade, Calculus – 10th Grade), graduate of Cornell University, School of Engineering with a BS in Computer Science (May 2001) which required 4 semesters of Calculus.

I am qualified to tutor all coursework from 3rd grade - SAT / ACT Prep.

I look forward to developing that passion in you. Please contact me to discuss your goals and concerns so we can put together a plan to be successful!
