About Arlene

I have been tutoring for many years and have a strong background in teaching reading to young children and improving reading, reading comprehension and reading fluency with older students. I spend 3 days a week working in a private school where I have space to work with individual middle and high school students during the day and after school. I have strong relationships with the teachers and learning specialist with whom I work very closely. I also meet with public school children, and other private school students, after school at my home office 3 days a week. We often work on reading comprehension issues by using a student's texts, either in English or history, so that students get some homework accomplished during our meeting and, therefore, see the immediate benefit in working with me. Many students also need to improve their writing, and my priority is to work on assigned papers as a direct way to help students improve their grades in all subject areas. I often use PSAT, SAT and ACT material for reading comprehension and for writing.

In the summer, I am the reading specialist for a nonprofit organization in Washington, D.C. which offers a full day program of academics and enrichment to children from homes below a certain income. The children with whom I work and whose teachers I supervise are rising 1st through 8th grade. The reading program is an integral part of every day and funding for this organization, Horizons, is primarily based on the improvement we can achieve in 6 weeks.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Dyslexia

I have been tutoring dyslexic students for many years, both as a private tutor and as a reading specialist for the national organization Horizons. I have successfully taught many children to read, including children who are dyslexic, and have also developed my own program to increase phonological awareness, comprehension and fluency.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have been the reading specialist for the National Horizons Program for the last 5 years where I am responsible for designing and implementing the reading program for rising 1st through 8th grade students. In addition, I have been tutoring children of all ages for over 20 years and specialize in reading, reading fluency, reading comprehension and writing. My original teacher's certification in New York was for K-6th grade.

Phonics

I have been the reading specialist in the Horizons program, a non-profit national program that offers services to children from families below the poverty line. I supervise the class teachers of grades 1-8 by grouping the students into reading sections, providing the books the group will read, and instructing the teachers on ways to teach and reinforce reading skills from phonics to comprehension. In this role, I interface with the librarian and the rest of the Horizons staff. In addition, when I began teaching many years ago in NYC, I was certified to teach grades K-6.
