About Tom

After graduating from the University of Richmond in 2010, I have spent the last six years in the Washington DC area. I currently work as as a Portfolio Manager building out a multi-family office in Washington DC. Prior to that, I worked as an adviser at a private wealth management firm, working with high net worth individuals and families. I have 4 years' experience tutoring in undergraduate finance and algebra, and my work has furthered my personal education in many aspects of finance, economics, mathematics, and relationship management. In my spare time I am an avid runner and enjoy playing basketball.

My tutoring style is tailored to fit the needs of the student. Ultimately, my goal is to allow the student to grasp the concept behind the different topics he or she is learning in order to provide the tools necessary to succeed with any future coursework. When possible, I like to use real world situations the student can relate to in order to establish connections between the assignment and what the student already knows.

I am very passionate about teaching finance and math - I believe every student has the capacity to learn and master any topic; it is up to me to present the information in an understandable fashion.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I have tutored in algebra 1 for two years and have always been proficient in the subject. When teaching algebra, I always find it best to break problems down into parts and allow the student to understand the concepts behind the problem instead of just showing the student how to solve.

Algebra 2

I have always had an affinity for algebra and mathematics in general. I've taught the subject for 2 years in my tutoring experience and have a very good grasp of the subject material. I often approach many real life subjects as if they were algebra problems.

American History

I've always been a history buff. From taking advanced classes in undergraduate and high school to current day, I am always fascinated by how we and our society have come to be. It's important to understand where we've come from and learn from history's mistakes.

Economics

I have always had an interest in economics - it is an integral part of our world, especially finance and political spectrums. I am fascinated with how economics affect our daily lives and always try to increase my personal education in this area. In addition, I took several economics courses in my undergraduate studies.

Finance

My college degree was in business administration with a concentration in finance. I currently work as an advisor in the finance industry and have a passion for the subject. I have tutored in finance topics for 2 years.
