About Ruth Anne

I believe that attaining a great education is the best thing a person can do for themselves. No one can ever take away your knowledge. Therefore, I love helping my students succeed. My experience includes teaching college-level courses at William and Mary in Virginia, the University of Delaware, Cecil College and Delaware Technical Community College.

Sometimes students just need one-on-one help in order to understand concepts or to learn how approach a new topic. I get my satisfaction from watching my students bloom and make significant progress immediately with tutoring.

My love for the social sciences makes me a strong tutor on these subjects. I also have years of in-class experience teaching these courses to students aged 17 - 80. Many of my classes have had up to 50% of the students from foreign countries. My evaluations by students have always been wonderful. One student from last semester wrote, "the best instructor I've ever had!"

Art has always been important to me personally. My education includes a strong background in art history. Also, I have a MFA in Photography and a Certificate in Museum Studies from the University of Delaware. I have worked in museums, art centers and exhibited my fine arts photography in galleries on the East Coast.

I have taught photography at three colleges and tutored students one-on-one.

Please contact me to learn more and to schedule a lesson. I look forward to working with you. A package price for several tutoring sessions can be made if desired.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Anthropology

I received a BA in Anthropology from the College of William and Mary in Virginia. I stay up-to-date by reading current research in Anthropology and using current textbooks. I currently teach Sociology and Psychology at Delaware Technical Community College and I use current anthropology research in my course lessons.

Archaeology

I received a BA degree in Anthropology with a concentration in historical Archaeology from William and Mary in Virginia. I worked for over 7 years in historical archaeology - the last five years were spent working under Ivor Noel Hume in the Department of Archaeology for the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation. I was the site cartographer, photographer and illustrator. I worked on the site described by Ivor Noel Hume in his book Search for a Century, Wolstenholme Towne. This was a 17th C. site settled in 1618 and was contemporary with Jamestown. I also worked on 18th C. sites in Williamsburg including the James Anderson House, the Public Hospital, the Willie Baker House and others.

Photography

In 1986, I received my Master of Fine Arts degree in photography from the University of Delaware along with a Certificate in Museum Studies. I taught Black and White film photography and critique at the University of Delaware for two years. Next I taught photography at Cecil College in North East, Maryland for 7 years. Recently, I have taught digital photography at Delaware Technical and Community College.

Sociology

Currently, I teach Sociology at Delaware Technical Community College. I have been teaching this course since 2009. We use the textbook Global Perspective by Joan Ferrante. Teaching Sociology is one of my favorite classes to teach. Sociology touches us all everyday but so many people are unaware of what sociology even means. An understanding of Sociology helps us all see the world in more realistic terms and helps us make better choices for our success.
