As a former elementary school teacher, I know what classroom teachers expect from their students and I'm able to help your child reach his full potential. I have tutored numerous students in various subject areas and find that most children who struggle with assignments do so because the material is not presented in a way that best suites them. As a tutor, I seek to discover how each child learns and present material in a way that will make them successful. Children have a desire to learn, they have a natural love for it but sometimes, when they have difficulties in the classroom, their frustration overcomes that desire.

I decided to become a teacher in order to help children reach their goals, and become confident, self-motivated learners. When you give children the right tools, their potential is limitless. As a tutor, I strive to ensure that all children realize how much they are truly capable of.

On a personal note, I choose to home-school my own children because I realize how important one on one attention is for students and how difficult it is to achieve within a classroom. Tutoring will give your child that attention, giving them an edge when they are in a group setting.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am a former elementary school teacher with a bachelor's degree in education from Towson University. While working as a teacher, I was responsible for teaching every subject to my class. For a few years I even had to teach physical education and art! My Maryland state certification allowed me to teach in the K-8 grade levels and showed that I was competent in all disciplines. As a former teacher, I have a working knowledge of all curriculum areas and the tools to help me impart that knowledge to my students. Within the area of elementary education, I am qualified and confident that I can help your child.
Phonics,

Phonics

My experience in teaching and tutoring is with elementary students, as such, I am well versed in the area of phonics. Phonics is key to reading success. As an elementary teacher, I taught phonics skills daily as part of our reading program. Students must understand the rules of language and their importance, without them, reading a new word is impossible. Phonics are the nuts and bolts of the English language and understanding them early on is pivotal for future academic success. I also continue to teach phonics as I home school my children. My children are my biggest testimony to the importance of phonics. They have never attended school and test well above their grade levels in the area of reading. It amazes me that they are capable of so much, after I have watched so many students struggle in this area. With the proper basic understanding, your child's potential is limitless.
Study Skills,

Study Skills

I believe that most of the battle for students in school is keeping themselves organized, knowing how to study and what information is the most important for their success. I am naturally an organized person and as a teacher I always encouraged my students to strive for organization. Sometimes, simply not knowing what is supposed to be turned in and when it should be there has a bigger impact on a student's grade than their actual knowledge of content. I used behavior modification with my particularly unorganized students (often they were my ADD/ADHD students) to help them break down the enormous task of keeping track of their learning. In addition, students need to know what information is relevant and what is not. Note taking, prioritizing and managing their time are all pivotal to good study habits. I am able to help students decide where to spend their precious time and resources to move themselves forward.

Wonderful with my son !

Tara M. has made a huge difference in my child's education. He has improved significantly in all subjects. He listens to her and she is very patient with him. She has a great deal of experience and is a very natural teacher who is comfortable with whatever she is teaching. This comes across to the child and that makes a big difference!
