About Lacey

As a social justice educator graduated from University of California, Los Angeles’ Teacher Education Program, I have taught diverse populations from coast to coast with great successes and incredible experiences. With over thirteen years experience as a secondary teacher and tutor, I have provided rigorous instruction and designed effective Reading, Writing and Wellness curriculum to increase students’ academic achievement. In reading, I specialize in literary/plot analysis using graphic organizers, practical reading strategies and identifying valid informational sources. In writing, I specialize in grammar, proofreading, spelling, vocabulary building, essay writing of all genres (expository, narrative, reading response, etc.), sentence structure and creative writing. In the area of Health and Wellness, I specialize in nutrition education, food and grocery store exposure, food therapy/ingredient analysis, meal planning and preparation, exercise programs and multimedia analysis of health facts.

My energy and enthusiasm for learning is clearly communicated to students via my expectations that everyone can succeed at achieving their goals. Furthermore, my professionalism and differentiated teaching style ensures that I can adequately meet the literacy needs of students with multiple learning styles. For the duration of my teaching career, my students have nearly doubled in proficiency rates against their peers on Common Core standards based English assessments. I am highly skilled at creating encouraging learning environments that help students accelerate academically, value their skill sets, increase their critical thinking skills and view themselves as productive life-long learners. While teaching, I enjoyed tutoring students after schools, Saturdays and during school breaks because students were able to utilize academic skills to improve or excel beyond their current academic capabilities.

All ages: grammar, literature, proofreading, writing, text analysis, vocabulary, analogies, curriculum design, ACT English, Common Core Literacy Standards and data journals.

I look forward to celebrating academic successes with you soon!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

The ACT is one of my favorite standardized test and I am confident that I can assist you in all of your English test prep needs! In addition to flash cards, literature exposure and writing practice, I can also help to create a test friendly attitude and increase literary confidence. From reading strategies to time literacy assignments, I have so much to offer struggling test takers!

Grammar

Having primarily worked in urban school districts over the past decade, I understand the grammar needs of a variety of students and have created successful strategies to increase grammar proficiency. I have strong proofreading and grammar skills in both writing and speaking. As a UCLA graduate for Social Justice education, I recognize that grammar is one of the most needed and least taught skills in our nation.

Literature

I have over a decade of experience in teaching secondary literature from a myriad of authors. My specialty is in the classics and making literature accessible to students of all learning styles. Some of my favorite authors include Toni Morrison, George Orwell, Elie Weisel, Zora Neale Hurston, Langston Hughes, Shakespeare, Ray Bradbury, John Steinbeck and Lois Lowry to name a few. I have designed engaging and successful curriculum for the works of the previous mentioned authors and more!

Proofreading

I am a published author of a Young Adult novella that I also copyedited prior to publishing. Additionally, I have over a decade of experience teaching writing and proofreading. Some of my specialties in this area include student friendly revision strategies and designing practical rubrics.

Writing

I have successfully tutored students of all learning styles in writing.
