I have been an educator for over twenty years, certified in English and Reading. I have been a Reading Specialist since 1989 and have worked in this capacity for public secondary schools. I have a Master's Degree from Howard University in Wash., DC. I have tutored many students on my own time for SAT preparation and for reading improvement. I believe better teaching and learning can occur in a one on one situation and I incorporate all learning styles when teaching/tutoring.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
As a certified Reading Specialist, I have studied how to teach reading to those with disabilities. I have over 20 years experience working with students and working with those who have special needs. I have had good results. I also have a child with a disability that is a very good reader due to my efforts.
As a reading specialist, I am certified in MD to teach K-12 grades which makes me qualified to tutor K-6 grade students in reading.
My training in reading makes me qualified to teach phonics which is a part of the reading process. I have tutored before a student in phonics, although not all students can hear
sounds accurately and, in that case, the students would have to use other means to read, such as: sight and tactile means
As a trained and experienced reading specialist in a public school setting, I have assisted new teachers prepare for the Praxis exam. Tutoring teachers requires selecting appropriate supplemental materials and providing direct strategies to be used when taking the test. I have received positive feedback from those teachers who felt more confident about taking the test.
Students often do poorly because they lack good study skills. A reading specialist can assist them to study more effectively and efficiently.
