About Cody

Hi, my name is Cody. I am currently a history teacher at Chopticon High School. I primarily teach US History but I am certified to teach all Social Studies content. In the past I have taught World History, Psychology, and US Government. I graduated from the University of Maryland, College Park in 2015 with two Bachelors degrees, one in History and one in Secondary Education. I am in the process of obtaining my Masters in History.

Prior to teaching I worked as a teacher's assistant in an early learning center in Calvert County for 3 years, and I tutored two high school students in Algebra I and II for 2 years. While I enjoy teaching, I believe tutoring to be an extremely beneficial experience for both the student and the tutor. One-on-one tutoring allows for the tutor to craft lessons and strategies specifically to the individual student in order to optimize their learning experience. It is difficult for teachers to provide this in the classroom on a daily basis. Tutoring offers the opportunity for students to get the much-needed attention and for tutors/teachers to get the experiences of specializing their lessons and strategies for various needs.

I currently teach American history and obtained my degree with a focus in American History. Antiquity and the study of Classic literature is a passion of mine. It is my FAVORITE period to study. In order to understand the US in the world, you must first understand the world. I went through rigorous study of European History throughout college.

Geography is a lost study in schools. Too many of my students come into my classroom thinking China is a continent and Russia is our neighbor to the North. I include geography lessons in everything I cover because map skills are essential in understanding both the past and the present.

Government is another subject essential to understanding American History and thus I have logged hundreds of hours studying American Government. I also taught this subject during my student-teaching internship while at the University of Maryland.

I'm a history nerd. I believe it is an extremely fun subject one you realize it is simply a bunch of stories and books about us. Textbooks make it boring. They rip the facts from the stories and show you the black and white of history. But there is SO MUCH excitement and fun in these stories that most students never see. I like to let my students experience the fun of history. They get the strange stories about people and events. In the end, I'm here to help the student...but if it isn't fun, then we are doing something wrong.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I tutored Algebra I and II for 5 years. Had a near perfect score on the Math section of the Praxis I test. I completed math courses through AP Calculus.

American History

I have a bachelors in US History and am currently a US History at Chopticon High School.

Baseball

Baseball is my favorite sport and my first love. I have studied the game for 20 years and played for 18 years at the little league, high school, and college club levels. I have played every position and was an assistant coach for a High School Varsity team in PG County for a year during my student teaching.

Classics

The study of Antiquity and the Classics is a true passion of mine and I have considerable experience with the Classical Era. I logged a minimum of 15 credit hours in the study of Classics and Ancient Greece and Rome while attending college. My personal library is lined with the works of Herodotus, Plato, Virgil, Homer, Thucydides, Livy, Plutarch, Aristotle, Socrates, Hesiod, Sophocles, and many others. This is a subject very near and dear to my heart.

Social Studies

I am a certified Social Studies teacher. I passed the Social Studies Praxis test with a 171 out of a possible 200 (minimum passing score was 150). I have been teaching social studies for two years now excluding my student teaching. I have taught world history, psychology, US history, and US government.

World History

I taught World History for one year. I have a bachelors in History. I wrote my senior thesis on WWII.

Writing

I've written hundreds of papers of all styles in my studies. I scored a near perfect score on the writing portion of the Praxis I. I've read an analyzed many texts including Sophocles, Shakespeare, and Hemingway. I'm an approved writing tutor on Wyzant.
