About Cathy

Thank you for taking time to view my teaching profile; however, I currently have a full student roster and am not taking new clients at this time.

I am an effective, experienced teacher of 10+ years. I am a full-time classroom teacher in a local public school and cherish the time working with my students. I would like to use my experience and expertise to make a difference for YOUR student scholar and your family.

I am highly qualified and certified in three states in the following areas: General Education (Pre-K through Grade 9), Reading/Language Arts, History/Social Studies, and Middle School Education.

I have specific graduate level studies and 7+ years of successful experience in working with students with special needs, including, but not limited to, Aspergers, Autism, and ADHD. I have worked with students with special needs over multiple years at parents' request and have seen great results. I specialize in helping students with organizational issues to become more organized and streamlined in order to achieve greater academic success.

I also tutor collegiate and college bound students in Writing, English, and Reading for test preparation and also proof papers for collegiate level courses. I specialize in helping you earn an "A" on your paper by not only correcting grammar, but I am especially skilled at making sentences or arguments "flow" for the maximum effect.

I excel at making learning fun while helping my students to meet and maintain high expectations. I am a patient teacher who will guide and nurture your student toward enjoying learning!

If student is 10 minutes late or less, session will end at regular time. If 15 minutes late or more, tutor reserves right to cancel session. If area schools are closed sessions will be canceled.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

I have worked successfully as both a classroom teacher and parent to children with Asperger's for 10+ years.

ASVAB

My specialities/certifications are in the Liberal Arts (English, History, Humanities) but I can assist with basic Math skills as needed with ASVAB preparation.

Autism

I have 10+ years of experience working successfully with children with autism and autism spectrum disorders. I have had parents request that I "loop" (teach their child over multiple years) with their child because of the success I have had.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am highly certified as a General Educator in Pre-K through 6 in three states with 7+ years full-time classroom teacher experience.

Elementary Math

I specialize in making abstract ideas relate to real world, concrete examples all learners find easy to relate to.

Elementary Science

Science can be fun! I use real world applications and models to help science to make sense!

English

I have worked with students Pre-K through college in helping students to better understand conventions of language and accurate usage.

Geography

Geography is more than maps! Geography can be fun and directly related back to any student's real-life experience. If your student is struggling in this area, I can help, both in Human Geography and Map Geography.

Grammar

This is my SPECIALTY! I love Grammar and guarantee that I can make a fluent writer out of even the most reluctant of students.

Phonics

I am highly qualified and certified in Reading/Language Arts with additional graduate studies in Reading diagnostics, techniques, and strategies.

Proofreading

I have proofed papers at collegiate level for 10+ years and taught the theory behind it as well.

Reading

I can diagnose, assess, and design specific instruction for your learner, no matter the level of ability; gifted, on grade level, or struggling.

SAT Reading

I have been successfully helping college-bound and current college students with English, Reading, and Writing for more than 10 years. Helping students earn A's on term papers is my specialty.

Spelling is more than memorization. I work with your student to understand the spelling patterns and rules in order to apply knowledge across the curriculum.

Study Skills

I have successfully mentored and taught students with SOL and MSA study strategies for 7+ years. I have special experience in working with student who have executive functioning skills issues in order to help develop organizational and effective study skills.

Vocabulary

I love words and know that all children and adults can improve their vocabulary. I have proven techniques that will encourage students to be a wordsmith!

Writing

Writing without reading is useless, just as reading without writing is as well. The two go hand-in-hand and I will work with your student (or you) in ways that will help the writer in you flourish!
