My name is Sameer S., and I am currently a sophomore at Yale University. This winter and spring, I am looking to do some virtual tutoring. I understand current circumstances are particularly strenuous for students of all ages, and that many students are finding it difficult to closely engage with teachers and classmates. I love working with kids, and have always enjoyed tutoring friends and family members. Additionally, I have coached younger kids in basketball, an activity that requires the same degree of patience, kindness, and enthusiasm as tutoring.

Writing has always been my strong-suit -- whether working on school newspapers, submitting pieces to the national writing board, or completing long research papers. I would love the opportunity to help kids of all ages (from the elementary to high school level) improve their writing. Additionally, as a history major, I have a vast knowledge of American and European history. I believe I can help students studying for an AP U.S. History Exam, or enrolled in any American or European centric history course. If younger, elementary or middle school aged kids are looking for more basic help in any traditional courses (algebra, English, basic history, etc.), I would also love to help.

I have always been drawn to writing, and throughout my academic career I have honed my skills by pursuing writing-intensive coursework and extra-curriculars. As a Yale freshman, I completed several paper-heavy courses geared for upperclassmen. At Sidwell Friends high school, all three of my history research papers received top marks from the National Writing Board. Another paper won awards at the National History Day competition (First Place in Washington DC and the Affiliate Award at Nationals). I have received other scholastic writing accolades and had several essays published in national journals. I received Sidwell’s journalism award with a cash prize that I used to attend the Medill-Northwestern Summer Journalism Institute. This was a month-long summer program entirely tailore

Academically, writing has always been my strong-suit, and beyond routinely receiving high marks on research papers and assignments of the like, my extra-curricular pursuits have likewise reflected this strength. At Sidwell Friends high school, all three of my history research papers received top marks from the National Writing Board, while another paper won awards at the National History Day competition (First Place in Washington DC and the Affiliate Award at Nationals).. I received Sidwell’s journalism award with a cash prize that I used to attend the Medill-Northwestern Summer Journalism Institute, where my draw to writing was significantly reinforced. Writing proficiency was a differentiating asset during my internship at The Maureen and Mike Mansfield Foundation this past summer, while the CEO tasked me to research and outline a series of articles for publication in Asia Insight magazine.

American History

At Yale, I major in history -- the subject I have always found most intriguing. Beyond scoring a perfect 5 on the AP U.S. History Exam, I have taken several years of American history and consistently received high marks. My draw to history was reinforced after participating in the National History Day Competition, where I submitted and defended an essay of mine in front of a panel of judges. I ultimately won first place in the competition for the State of Maryland, and received an affiliate award at the national level.

ADHD

I truly love helping kids improve their confidence, happiness and ultimately academic performance. Tutoring anyone with ADHD or other learning impairments requires a great degree of patience. I started a therapy program at a Senior Living Facility (Fox Hill) in Bethesda Maryland, where I worked closely with Dementia and Parkinson's patients. Beyond teaching me the importance of empathy, enthusiasm, and patience, this experience was incredibly fulfilling for me, and I would bring that same attitude towards helping students who are having difficulty in the classroom.
