About Carey

I taught Latin at all levels, from first year to Advanced Placement Latin IV, as well as levels I and II of ancient Greek, at Georgetown Preparatory School for 15 years. During my tenure here, I served for 7 years as Classics Department Chairman and strengthened the curriculum by creating homogeneity among the various teachers’ presentation of Latin grammar, syntax and translation tactics to 21st century adolescents. Throughout my career at Georgetown Prep, I regularly tutored special needs students, from freshman struggling with the rigors of Latin I to seniors working through the Advanced Placement syllabus. Since I have left Prep, I have continued to work privately with local high school boys and girls as well as adults looking to improve their Latin reading skills.

I translated extensive amounts of 16th and 17th century Latin for two authors, John Glassie and Scott Pilarz, S.J., whose books, Athanasius Kircher: Man of Misconceptions and Robert Southwell and the Mission of Literature: 1561-1595, respectively, have met with critical acclaim.

I've been studying Latin for over 30 years and have made my living teaching and translating it for over 20 years. I'm a very effective tutor for grade and high school students because I understand fully the shortcomings of existing institutional text book methods. I suffered beneath their weighty confusion as a student and corrected their shortcomings as a teacher. Whether you're struggling with Latin 1 or have come to dread your A.P. preparation, my method will clear the fog.

I love the Latin language; its literature has shaped to a large extent my manner of living. I'm also rather disappointed in the way it is taught in schools these days. My job is to empower students with the ability to approach Latin with success and to cull the benefits of discipline, confidence and imagination that the study of the language offers.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
