About Emily

*Because of my own graduate studies, I am only available for limited online tutoring and am on London time, but please contact me with any questions or interest.

I graduated from Northwestern University in 2015 (B.A. in History, June 2015, Magna Cum Laude and History Department Honors) and the University of Oxford in 2016 (M.St. in British and European History, 1500-Present, July 2016, with Distinction), and I am currently pursing my PhD in History at Oxford. I have experience tutoring students in writing, English literature, US history, and European history, and I did some volunteer tutoring with the Spanish Honor Society as an IB student. I have also tutored in more informal settings, including leading study/review sessions for non-majors in my history classes and providing extensive peer review and editing to other students in both history and English classes. In addition to my tutoring work, I have worked as a writing project intern with an educational website for the humanities, where I write blog posts about historical topics and find and upload lecture videos.

My goals as a tutor are to make the humanities more accessible and to help students gain skills -- such as written communication and analysis -- that can be used in other contexts. I have encountered many students in high school and at university who struggle to write and read closely, as well as many who see the humanities as overly academic and irrelevant to any potential career. I hope to remedy these misconceptions and knowledge gaps by instilling in students the fundamental skills necessary for clear communication and successful study of the humanities.

- English/Writing:
I successfully completed IB English HL in high school and received a 5 on my AP English Literature exam. I also scored an 800 on both the reading and writing sections of my SAT as well as a 168 out of 170 on the verbal section of my GRE and a 5.5 out of 6 on the analytical writing section. Since beginning university, I have taken a number of literature courses, including one on Chaucer's Canterbury Tales (read in Middle English) and one on early modern English utopian literature. I have done extensive peer review and editing with other students in both English and history classes, and I wrote an article that was published in an undergraduate history journal during my junior year. I have also written both a master's dissertation and a senior honors thesis, so I am very capable of successfully working on long-term writing and research projects.

Please let me know if you have any questions or would like my help. I look forward to working with you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

American History

I took AP US History and AP NSL Government in high school as well as US history courses at university, including US Legal and Constitutional History Before 1850. I scored well in all of these courses, earning a 5 on my APUSH exam, a 4 on my NSL exam, and an A in my university course. I also currently tutor multiple students in American history.

English

I scored a 6 in IB English HL and have taken a number of English courses during my time at university. These courses include a study of Chaucer's Canterbury Tales (in Middle English) and one of early modern English utopian literature. I have extensive experience writing, closely reading, and editing, so I'm very capable of coming up with reading and writing strategies that would work best for each student.

European History

As an IB student, I took two years of IB Higher Level History, during which time I wrote an internal assessment about the Nuremberg Laws. I also have a B.A. from Northwestern University in English and European History (Magna Cum Laude and departmental honors), and I wrote a senior honors thesis about English uprisings of 1536. I am pursuing a Master of Studies degree in British and European history at the University of Oxford.

Music History

As an IB student, I took IB Music SL and completed an extended essay in music, which compared two clarinet quintets composed by Mozart and Brahms. I began university as a dual degree student in clarinet performance and humanities, and during my sophomore year I took a music history course on Western music up to 1600. I have also examined music history from the perspective of a history student, analyzing the role of music in social and cultural change, particularly in early modernity.

Proofreading

I currently work with multiple students on essay-writing and editing and provided a great deal of editing and peer review for other students as an undergraduate. I've also had one paper published in an undergraduate history journal and was awarded runner up/honorable mention for best senior honors thesis in my university's history department, so I've had substantial experience with formal writing.

SAT Writing

I received an 800 on the writing section of my SAT as well as a 5.5 out of 6 on the writing section of my GRE. I have an extensive background in writing, beginning with my studies as an IB student and continuing through my experiences as a history student at Northwestern University and the University of Oxford. I am also quite experienced in editing and peer review, so I am able to help students highlight areas for improvement and learn how to strengthen those aspects of their writing.

Social Studies

As a history student who has also taken multiple courses in social sciences (including political science and sociology), I have an extensive background in social studies. I have also helped my mother (a teacher) prepare materials for her middle school history and social studies classes, and I have even helped her students edit and write essays and speeches. Particularly given the significant variations in social studies curricula between schools and counties, I am happy to build my tutoring around each student's specific curriculum, strengths, and areas for improvement. I have earned a B.A. in English and European History from Northwestern University, and I will be pursuing a Master of Studies in British and European History at the University of Oxford in the fall.

Writing

I am an IB graduate, and my education has consistently emphasized writing and analysis. In 2014, I wrote an article about "New Monarchy" in late fifteenth-century England, which was published in Primary Source: The Indiana University Undergraduate History Journal. I have since also completed a senior honors thesis about English uprisings of 1536, which was awarded honorable mention/runner up for the best senior honors thesis in history at Northwestern University. During this process I have also provided extensive peer review and editing for other thesis students. Outside of history writing, I have taken a number of literature courses at Northwestern, including one on Chaucer's Canterbury Tales and another on early modern English utopian literature. I currently tutor multiple students in writing, ranging from high school to PhD.
