About Marcelline

Bio

I have a passion for teaching and tutoring--seeing the lightbulb go on as my students reach that "Aha!" moment is what charges me up and keeps me coming back for more. My students have often told me that I make “complex stuff” make sense, which is what I think a tutor needs to do. My approach is focused on not only helping you learn the subject, but helping you learn to learn. My telling the student a bunch of information is just a recipe for rote memorization, not learning—so I don't do...

My telling the student a bunch of information is just a recipe for rote memorization, not learning—so I don't do that. I help the student discover the knowledge and understand the “why” behind it, so that real learning takes place (and isn’t forgotten the day after the test!). When explanation is needed, I often use analogies to help my students make a connection between what they know and what they need to know. If that doesn’t work, I try something else. Different people learn in different ways, so the way I tutor and teach varies with each individual. In fact, I like to start a tutoring relationship with a short “learning styles” assessment so I can tailor my tutoring to the way that particular student learns best.

My varied background (academic as well as professional) allows me to tutor in subjects as varied as business and political science, while my practical experience has made me an expert tutor in the tools students need to excel in their academic lives and careers, such as productivity software (Microsoft Office suite), as well as grammar, reading, and writing.

In addition to over 25 years of international business experience (corporate, nonprofit, and entrepreneurial), I've taught business classes for the past five years at various universities, including Georgetown University (currently), University of Maryland University College, and Benedictine University. Courses I've taught include:
•Graduate Courses: Foundations of HR, HR in the International Context, Research Process and Methods, Organization Development, Organizational Behavior, Service Management, Ethics & Social Responsibility in Management, International Organization Development, Master's Capstone
•Undergraduate Course: Human Resource Management
•High School Courses: International Business, Leadership

I've had an intense focus on grammar throughout my academic career, and I currently teach the Master's Capstone at Georgetown University. I consider it my obligation as an instructor to make sure my students are prepared to write properly using correct grammar. It sets my younger students up for academic success regardless of their majors, and it ensures that my adult students are credible and respected for their writing skills throughout their careers.

I've been an early adopter of many of the most-used business software and have maintained a rigorous and up-to-date knowledge of the latest offerings. Most people use a fraction of the capabilities of their software: I am a fierce proponent of using the software to produce the best work in the least amount of time. I've often found myself being the go-to person in the office when someone needs to learn how to make the software "sing."

I am a Ph.D. candidate in International Relations at American University and have taught World Politics there as an adjunct faculty member. As part of the Ph.D. process, I passed comprehensive exams in international politics and comparative and regional politics. These comprehensive exams are designed to show you have the knowledge to teach these subjects at the university level. I also have a passion for anything international or global!
