In my previous career as a diplomat, I served all over the world, learned several languages, wrote extensively, and saw history in the making. Since retiring, I have developed my teaching skills, working with learners of all ages, from kindergarten through adult professionals, in several subjects. I have a certificate in teaching English, speak fluent French, have spoken Russian and Romanian at professional levels, and have studied Spanish, German, Arabic, and Latin as well. Suffice it to say, I know a lot about teaching and learning languages.
Here is what I can do for your student: I can make a given curriculum come alive. I always work through the required language exercises with students, but make it interesting and fun with drills taken from popular songs, games, and (brief) anecdotes and stories. This allows the student to see the reasons for what we are doing and provides cultural background.
Likewise for history and geography: history is above all story, geography is exploration, and this where I start. By making it exciting, kids come to master the curriculum- and absorb the key dates and statistical evidence it requires- while developing a love for the topic. Finally, given my professional experience, I bring out the relevance of the subject matter with real-life experiences. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

I have a BA in History and a MA in political science (specializing in international relations) and a Certificate in legal studies. More importantly, I worked for 25 years in the US Government, 22 of them as a Foreign Service Officer. I have wide experience in government, politics, and international affairs. I particularly enjoy teaching this material, and can make it especially interesting due to my real-life experience in the field.
I served for 22 years as a Foreign Service Officer. A large part of my duties involved public speaking--not only in English but in French, Romanian, and Russian! I wrote and delivered speeches and lectures all over the world, gave impromptu talks, and answered often controversial questions, often in front of television cameras--in many countries. I was good at it, and would like to share what works with students in order to help them perform better.
