About Howard

With a background in architecture, I have been teaching science, Physics and Chemistry for the last 16 years.
I am currently in my thirteenth year of teaching Physics to high school students having previously taught Chemistry for seven years. I am certified to teach both subjects in New Jersey.

I have tutored students in SAT prep for 18 years starting with my own children and their friends. I built up a group of students over the years that I taught in New Jersey. I have recently returned to he DC area and am teaching at a charter school but am looking to build up my tutoring services again. As an Ivy League graduate, I hold an undergraduate degree from Yale University and two Master's degrees. The first is a Master's of Architecture from the University of Pennsylvania, Graduate School of Design and the second is a Master's of Educational Technology from Ramapo State College in New Jersey. I have a 20 year career in architecture mainly with international hotel companies where I traveled extensively throughout the world. I changed careers to teaching 16 years ago with a specialty tin sciences, particularly Chemistry and Physics.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Chemistry

As a pre-med and pre-architecture student at Yale University, I have taken both General Chemistry and Organic Chemistry. I am certified to teach Chemistry by the State of New Jersey having passed the Chemistry PRAXIS exam and completed sufficient course credits in this subject. In addition, I have taken several online courses in Chemistry through the University of Nebraska, Lincoln and two summers ago, I completed a course in Chemistry for Teachers at the American Association for the Advancement of Science sponsored by the National Science Foundation. I am a member of both the National Association of the Teachers of Physics and the National Science Teachers Association.

Physical Science

I am certified to teach both Chemistry and Physics in the State of New Jersey, having fulfilled their academic requirements. I have also passed the PRAXIS exams in Physics, Chemistry and General Science. I am a registered architect who became a teacher 16 years ago and I enjoy working with students to bring the joy of science to them. I have been teaching Conceptual Physics and Advanced Physics at a DC Charter School for the past five years.

Physics

I have passed the PRAXIS teaching exam in Science, Physics and Chemistry and am certified to teach Physics and Chemistry in the State of New Jersey. I have taught Physics to Seniors, Juniors, Freshmen and Sophomores for twelve years and am currently teaching a course in Advanced Physics to a class of mainly Seniors at a charter school in D.C.

SAT Math

I have had long term knowledge of the SAT. I have completed a content based analysis of the types of questions and what percent of each type you might encounter.

SAT Reading

As a graduate of Yale University, I have been tutoring both English and Math for the SAT / ACT since my son graduated high school in 1998. I am familiar with the format of both tests and have created study guides based on the frequency of questions for grammar and reading. The most important factor in taking these tests is to understand the how the questions are arranged and the phrasing of each question.

SAT math

Howard helped my son to understand math concepts required for answering SAT questions. He connected with his student and was patient and efficient. Looking forward to next lesson.
