About Masha

If you are looking for a thorough and customized approach to language learning, rest assured you will get what you asked for if you choose me to be your instructor.

A Russian native, professionally trained at a highly recognized Moscow State Pedagogical University in Russia as an education specialist and an ESOL instructor, and later, in the US, as a PR professional at the American University School of Communication, I have been practicing teaching both languages at a high school as well as college level courses and with adult professional groups in Russia and in West Germany.

In the US, I have been teaching ESOL and Russian privately in one-on-one and group classes, provided ESOL instruction at Montgomery College Refugee Training Center and within the Montgomery County schools and professional training system. I also taught Russian as a second language to kids at Shalom Educational Center at JCC in Rockville.

Having lived and practiced language instruction along with providing marketing/communications services for clients in the US for 19 years now, I can offer a wide array of materials and variety of methods to either spur second language acquisition or polish pronunciation and/or grammar for those who already have some language knowledge.

In our classes oriented toward real-life communication challenges occurring in a variety of daily settings, we will use formal academic and informal materials to study vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation; listen to and learn songs; engage in role-playing activities and even watch movies in the language to try to understand and imitate not only the language, but the way it is applied to daily situations. Practice makes perfect and you'll have plenty of it!

I shall be looking forward to hear from you.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ESL/ESOL

I have a Master's degree from the Moscow State Teacher Training University in Education and English as a Second Language as double-major. I have taught ESL/ESOL in the US for over 15 years in groups and individually at home and for Montgomery College Refugee Center. My clients ranged in age from 5 to 65 years old. My teaching method varies depending on a particular student needs. For school age kids we usually work with the materials they are given in school to ensure the core curriculum requirements are fulfilled, and supplement those with deeper training materials, which can include grammar and vocabulary drills, creative writing, dialogue speech development and phonetics to name a few. For those who achieve their immediate goals, I can offer expanded curriculum and immersion exercises.

My second Master's is in Public Communications from the American University in Washington, DC. This adds value to the communication aspect of the programs I work on with my students.

Russian

I am a Russian native with an MS degree in Education and foreign language instruction from the Moscow State Pedagogical University. I have taught Russian for over 15 years in the US and overseas to English speaking students and adults. My method varies depending on the student's needs: from strictly academic studies using a text book-based approach to submersion techniques, which include singing, movement, video etc. to relax the student so that he/she can 'live' the language. Both techniques yield fantastic results in limited time.

Great Tutor

Masha is an excellent teacher who is very well organized. She is very punctual and professional. Her course material is very useful. She was quickly able to detect my weaknesses and helped me to understand what I needed to work on. I highly recommend her.
