Hello, I'm Oren! I have for a BA in mathematics and computer science from Washington College. I worked for five years as a high school teacher and for one year as a college adjunct lecturer. I have extensive experience tutoring students from the middle school to graduate level in a variety of subjects.

My philosophy for teaching is that it is insufficient for the student to merely memorize a formula; it is necessary to understand the formula's derivation as well as its potential applications. This leads to a much greater understanding of the subject material. Additionally, I believe that although mathematics is far easier than most people realize, its plethora of terminology and proliferation of formulas, as well as the unique way in which it is written, compounds its difficulty and confuses aspiring mathematicians. I like to make abstruse material accessible for the struggling student. I take pride in my ability to tailor my explanations for each student's individual level of understanding.

I also believe that math and computer science are two of the most creativity-dependent subjects. Certainly they cannot be thoroughly understood through rote memorization.

Computer Programming,

Computer Programming

I worked for five years as a high school computer science teacher and one as a college adjunct lecturer. I am most comfortable with Java but I can help a beginning student working in any language. I am happy to help with basic programming, OOP, data structures and algorithms, or any other programming topic. As an AP Computer Science A teacher for five years, over half of my students earned a 5 on the exam and none scored below a 3.

Homeschool

Algebra 1,

Algebra 1

A solid algebra foundation is necessary for almost all later math classes. A student who cannot understand algebra 1 concepts will have great difficulty in their future mathematics endeavors. Algebra 1 typically includes subjects such as factoring and the quadratic formula.
Algebra 2,

Algebra 2

A solid algebra foundation is necessary for almost all later math classes. Algebra 2 typically includes subjects related to a great variety of functions as well as systems of equations.
Calculus,

Calculus

I tutor high school students up through AB Calculus and college students in differential calculus (Calculus I at most universities).
Geometry,

Geometry

A solid geometry foundation is generally necessary for subjects such as precalculus and calculus. In my experience, students may struggle with geometry because they are unused to thinking visually, or they have difficulty grasping the logical constructs necessary for proof. I can assist students in any aspects of geometry.
Prealgebra,

Prealgebra

Prealgebra typically includes subjects such as graphing, properties of numbers, and simple geometry and probability problems. I can assist with all of these topics.
Precalculus,

Precalculus

Precalculus almost always includes trigonometry, and typically includes other subjects such as vectors, 3D geometry, and introductory discrete mathematics. Due to its varied nature, students may be very adept at one facet of precalculus while they struggle with another. I can provide assistance with any precalculus topic, whether or not I have listed it above.
SAT Math

SAT Math

The SAT math section primarily consists of linear equations and inequalities, nonlinear expressions and equations, and data analysis. It also contains questions on geometry, trigonometry, and complex numbers. I can assist with all of these topics.

Last minute AP help

Oren was wonderful at helping our son go over some gaps in his learning for his upcoming Computer Science A AP exam. He was helpful at identifying these gaps through multiple choice errors and helping to prepare for the free write which wasn't covered much in class. He's responsive and helpful!

Jennifer, 3 lessons with Oren

Very intelligent and very easy to work with!

He helped me understand algorithm analysis and has the knowledge to help with Theory of Computation. Oren is understanding, patient, and detail oriented. Teaching is a skill and his skill level is very high. Highly recommend!

Great math tutor!

Oren is super smart and able to connect with students! My son enjoyed being tutored by Oren and is starting to gain his confidence in math!

Meg, 1 lesson with Oren

Knowledgeable and patient tutor

Oren has helped my daughter prepare for the math portion of her SAT and has been very patient teaching her and reinforcing what she learned in school. He doesn't move on from a topic until he is sure she understands it.

Mary, 11 lessons with Oren

Knowledgeable and thorough

After just the first session, my son felt like he already better understood his geometry. He was able to ask questions and Oren encouraged him to be honest about what he did not know so that he could be sure to cover those areas thoroughly, rather than to assume he did know.

Anna, 7 lessons with Oren

Knowledgeable and effective

Oren always has an answer and, more importantly, knows how to convey it with clear and effective explanations. Excellent tutor!

Carmen, 3 lessons with Oren

Very helpful tutor!

Oren is working with my daughter on pre-calculus. She was having a hard time with probability, and in one session he gave her clear explanations and helped her understand the concepts as well as how to approach the problems. He worked with her a second time on normal distribution and again was able to explain things in a way that made sense to her. She has gone into her tests much better prepared and confident... and the scores have reflected that! Would highly recommend Oren.
