I was looking initially for a public speaking coach for my teenage son to better prepare him for college. My son has residual speech awkwardness from an early childhood speech delay (for which he received years of traditional speech therapy from pre-school through middle school). He continued to improve a bit on his own in the years since his therapy ended, but I felt he needed much greater fluency or it could be an impediment in his career. It occurred to me that his speech issues were similar to some nearly-fluent foreigners, so perhaps someone who works with accent elimination would be useful for him.
Shelley was indeed great at identifying the components of his speech that were off and devising exercises to target the vocal inflections and phrasing that needed to improve. I was very impressed with her array of solutions, and my son found it engaging. His speech has improved noticeably in the couple of months we've had Shelley coming for 2 or 3 one hour sessions per week. He still has more work to do (including pushing himself to practice the changes) but she has given him some excellent tools and insight. We hope to fit in more sessions during his vacations in the next couple of years.
If somebody asked me six months ago which academic subjects I hated the most in my university life, I would definitely have said it’s writing. But having worked with Ms. Shelley for the past six months, I learned that writing is a subject that could be just as interesting and exciting as science, where we always learn new things. I've had a weekly session of English communications (ESL) with Shelley for more than six months, and it’s been very productive experience.
Typically, I present material she sent me in a short speech, and she gives me feedback on contents, grammar and pronunciation. Her feedback is always precise and helpful to improve my fluency.
She is very flexible to meet my demand and always well-prepared for the session. She made a series of pronunciation drills which helped me stabilize the pronunciation of sounds I had a trouble pronouncing. I studied it as an undergraduate and have continued to study and write about it for many years. One of the many hats I've worn in my life is that of a playwright and screenwriter. Sandy was a master teacher and his method not only informed my writing but also the writing of playwrights like David Mamet, directors like Sydney Pollack and the acting of theater artists and film stars like JoAnne Woodward, Diane Keaton and Robert Duvall.
As an undergraduate at Tulane University, I majored in theater, studied directing and ran an improvisation workshop there using techniques borrowed from Viola Spolen, founder of the Second City company in Chicago. After graduating from Tulane,I headed for NYC and the Playhouse, and at the age of 23 founded my own theater company off-off Broadway. Ultimately, I went to law school at Loyola University where I obtained a law degree and I practiced law for ten years. Yet, when I had the opportunity to do playwriting full time, I took it in a New York second!
