Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I am a Maryland certified teacher in early childhood education (k-3) and special education (k-8). I currently teach in an emotionally disturbed classroom with students who are diagnosed with ADD/ADHD.
I am capable of providing instruction that allows the student to move and engage physically in a lesson to make the lesson more meaningful and purposeful for the student.
I use brain breaks and other techniques to motivate and encourage the child.

Dyslexia

I currently teach in a emotionally disturbed classroom with students who are diagnosed with dyslexia. I am aware of the special needs and challenges a dyslexic student may have to face. I use effective, whole brain approach to teaching a student with dyslexia. I teach from whole to part to whole. I believe it takes time, consistency, and practice but dyslexia can be overcome and the learner can become a fluent reader. I am currently a Maryland certified teacher in early childhood education (k-3) and special education (k-8).

Elementary (K-6th)

I am currently a Maryland certified teacher in early childhood education (k-3) and special education (k-8). I am a teacher in a special education school with various types of learning/emotional disabilities (grades 2-5). I have a hands-on engaging approach to instruction and like to make the material pertinent and meaningful to the learner. I teach all content areas on a daily basis and am familiar with Maryland state standards and Common Core.

Phonics

I work with special needs students who require extra help decoding and using phonics skills to read and become fluent, accurate readers. My early childhood certification and my previous experience teaching reading and phonics skills in Reading First schools in a first grade classroom enhance my teaching of reading. I understand how to use various strategies to overcome difficulties young readers may face. My hands-on, manipulation of words and sounds allow the student to begin to use whole language and become more comfortable in decoding and reading words. I believe in a whole-part-whole approach to reading and use research based instruction to move the reader forward.

Reading

I currently work with students on reading skills (grades K-5). I work in small group sessions focusing on phonics, decoding, flucency, rate, expression, and comprehension skills. I integrate manipulatives, hands-on activities, and make the lesson meaningful to the reader. I also work across the curriculum using science, social studies, and other subjects to enhance reading instruction. I believe time, consistency, patience, and practice will help the student to become a master reader!
