About Gary

Intro:
Hello! I am a college student with a huge passion for math. I have an Associate's Degree in Business from Harford Community College, and am a current student at Towson University studying Applied Mathematics. I am proficient in pre-algebra, algebra I, linear algebra, pre-calculus, and (especially) calculus with applications (aka "business calc"). Since starting at HCC, I have taken: College algebra, statistics, contemporary mathematics, and calculus with applications, earning an A in each course. It was not until taking business calc in the Spring of 2016 that I decided that math was the right career choice for me. During my time in business calc, all of the content came to me naturally, and I enjoyed doing it, which is what brought me here.

Approach:
Math can be frustrating when you don't fully understand what is going on, and a short-tempered tutor can make it even more frustrating. My approach is to be patient, kind, and through, and to encourage students to read between the lines when doing math. A tutor who tells their student A and B is not giving the student as much of an opportunity to fully learn the material. For that reason, I make sure to give helpful hints when the student is stuck, (instead of just telling them what to do), which will force them to think deeper and, hopefully, figure it out on their own. Although I have not yet tutored under a for-profit organization, I have helped friends, younger students, and siblings many times in the past. For my most recent example, I helped two of my friends study for a cumulative calculus applications final exam, on which they both earned a 99%. As I have discovered over the last few years, a lone student trying to figure out arithmetic on their own is at high risk of frustration, often leading to giving up. That is why I am driven to be a tutor; to show students that there is a way to solve those difficult problems, and it is much easier than they may think. Math is an intimidating subject, but when broken down and fully analyzed, it will stand no chance against your once struggling student.

Qualifications:
Earned an A in: college algebra, statistics, contemporary mathematics, and calculus with applications. Found my "calling" for mathematics while taking calculus with applications course at HCC. Earned an A on every assignment throughout the course. Exempt from the cumulative final exam, but volunteered to take it anyway. Finished the final exam in 38 minutes (25 minutes before anyone else in the room) earning a 98%. Helped my two of my friends in the course, (one of which failed the first two exams), and am happy to say that I contributed to both of them earning a 99% on the final exam, and B's in the class.

Outro:
My goal is to encourage students to fully understand the math that is thrown at them, and hopefully even get them to love the subject as much as I do. Math is fun, and I plan to spread that mentality to each and every student I come across. Thank you for visiting my profile, and I hope to hear from you soon.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

Since algebra 1 is used in virtually all forms of math, I have developed proficient skills in the subject over the course of my time in college thus far. I use algebra on a near daily basis, even when I am on a break between semesters (it's hard to stay away from math).

Calculus

I would like to say that I am only proficient in Calculus with Applications (Business Calculus). During my time in Business Calculus, I earned A's on every assignment, breezed through quizzes, tests, and homework, and was exempt from the cumulative final exam. Although I was exempt, I still volunteered to take the exam (because I liked the course so much). I finished the exam in 38 minutes (a whole 25 minutes before the next person finished) earning a 98%.

Elementary Math

I am very proficient with elementary math, since I have used it in every math class I have taken.

Prealgebra

I helped my friend (who claimed to hate math) with his pre-algebra course a couple of years ago. After a few times studying together, he understood the arithmetic much more, and even called math "fun."

Precalculus

Precalculus was heavily used in Calculus with Applications, in which I (nearly effortlessly) earned an A.
