About Jennifer

Hello!

I'm Jennifer. I'm a current student at Towson University majoring in English Secondary Education and minoring in French. I currently have 83 college credits and a 3.9 GPA, and I will receive my teaching certification in 2018 in order to become a middle/high school English teacher.

I specialize in helping middle school, high school, and adult students with English writing, reading, grammar, and college/scholarship application essays. I also offer SAT test prep and study skills.

I currently volunteer in middle school English language arts and ESOL (English as a Second Langauge) classrooms in Baltimore County. I have also spent over 80 hours as a mentor in college freshmen English classrooms, where I currently work with students over the course of the semester to improve their writing.

In addition, I have held over 120 hours of tutoring sessions at Towson University's Writing Center, where I work with a variety of students (including English language learners) on their writing assignments to help them become stronger writers and critical thinkers.

I believe that all students deserve to have someone who believes in them. I know that every student has the potential to succeed. My goal as a tutor and as a future teacher is to let students know that I am on their side. I spend time getting to know students, and I work to establish a comfortable tutoring environment that fosters learning. I provide encouragement and engaging activities to help students become more confident and independent learners. I tailor my lessons to meet the individual learning needs of each student. Every student learns differently, so I try new teaching strategies until we find one that clicks.

I offer tutoring sessions both in person and online. Contact me if you have any questions.

I look forward to hearing from you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

I specialize in helping students with English grammar, writing, and reading, primarily in middle school through adulthood. I have held over 120 tutoring sessions at Towson University's Writing Center, where I work with a variety of students (including English language learners) on their writing assignments to help them become stronger writers and critical thinkers. I have also spent 75 hours as a mentor in freshmen English classrooms where I work with students over the course of the semester to help them improve their writing.

ESL/ESOL

I'm a current volunteer in middle school ESOL classrooms in Baltimore county. I have also worked with dozens of English Language Learners as a tutor at Towson University's Writing Center. Although I am not always familiar with the learner's native language (I know French, but not much Spanish), I have many effective strategies to teach English speaking, reading, and writing to students with various language backgrounds.

French

I'm a current French minor, well-versed in French grammar, although I am not a native speaker. I have taken over six years of French classes including upper-level French courses I have taken in college. I specialize in helping with grammar, comprehension, test prep, and some basic speaking skills.

Grammar

As an English major and future English teacher, I am very experienced teaching English grammar. I have held over 120 tutoring sessions in Towson University's Writing Center, where I frequently help students improve their grammar. I have also worked with many English language learners to help them improve their grammar skills.

Reading

I have experience in tutoring centers helping primarily middle school, high school, and college students learn comprehension and critical thinking skills. I have also worked with English language learners (adolescent and adult students) on their reading skills.

SAT Reading

I understand the expectations for the SAT, and I can provide many excellent SAT resources. As an English major, I am well-versed in vocabulary, sentence/paragraph structure, and reading comprehension, which are all essential to succeeding in SAT reading.

SAT Writing

I provide SAT writing resources and individualized lessons to help students prepare for the multiple choice section as well as the essay. I work with students on their skills in grammar, sentence/paragraph organization, vocabulary, and reading comprehension, all of which are essential to succeeding on the exam.

My son was struggling organizing his research paper for college English, leaving us both feeling very stressed out. Jennifer was available on short notice and helped my son organize his ideas. We will seek her help again, if necessary, for our other children.
