About Abby

I am a certified special educator with seven years of experience working with exceptional students in Harford County Public Schools. Children with exceptional needs learn differently than their non-disabled, same-aged peers. I take the time to know how to best teach your child. I have worked with children with all disabilities and levels of need. Because I worked in Harford County Public Schools, I understand what is expected of students, and I have materials already prepared to help your child achieve those expectations. Furthermore, I have tried and true methods to help your child achieve his/her IEP goals, reinforcing what is being taught in the classroom.

I have taught in all of the core content areas and have instructed students at every level from first grade through fifth grade. I am trained in reading and math intervention programs that will help your child grow from their current grade level. I am a certified in the Lindamood-Bell method of teaching reading decoding and comprehension. This method of teaching is more effective and far superior to any other method offered publicly or privately. I have seen this method of instruction increase student reading by several grade levels in short periods of time.
As your child's tutor, I will make learning relevant to their everyday life and fun. Children learn more effectively when they are relaxed and relate not only to instruction but to the instructor. I have positive relationships with my students, and work to build students' educational proficiency and personal character. I will teach your child to be a problem solver that carries over from school to personal life. I will teach your child test-taking strategies that will last throughout his/her educational career.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I am a certified special educator with extensive course work in understanding the ADHD diagnosis and how to best teach this population. I have 10 years of experience working with students with ADHD. I have worked with this population of students in a large group setting as well as one on one instruction.

Aspergers

I am a certified special educator with extensive course work in understanding the Aspergers diagnosis and how to best teach this population. I have 10 years of experience working with students with Aspergers. I have worked with this population of students in a large group setting as well as one on one instruction.

Common Core

I was a long-term special teacher at Bel Air elementary school and Red Pump Elementary. I taught Common Core Mathematics and Reading for grades 2, 3, 4 and 5. I also have specialized reading experience that correlates to intervention teaching for students of all grades.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am a certified special educator, grades K-12. I recently completed my certification coursework, which consisted of 53 credits in education of students in kindergarten through twelfth grade. This coursework included over 100 hours of practicum teaching of small groups and whole groups. I also recently completed my student teaching which consisted of teaching students, first grade through eighth.

Phonics

I am a certified special educator, grades K-12. I am also certified in the Lindamood-Bell method of teaching reading decoding and comprehension. Lindamood-Bell charges $115 per session for the same quality of instruction I deliver. I know this because I worked for Lindamood-Bell in Towson. This method of teaching is more effective and far superior to any other method offered publicly or privately. I know because I have learned most of them. I have seen this method of instruction increase student reading by several grade levels in short periods of time.
