Corporate Training

Grammar,

Grammar

I earned a BA in English and graduated with honors. I have taught all-things-English to individual students and to small group classes. I see grammar as a way to help us communicate more clearly. Mistakes in grammar can cause confusion or distract the listener/reader from what is being said. I don't love grammar -- I love language. I enjoy helping students sharpen their skills so that they can communicate clearly in life as well as in class.
Proofreading

Proofreading

I earned a BA in English with a minor in Journalism. Editing my own work and helping students edit their work has given me experience in proofreading. I have also taught students about standard proofreading marks so that they can prepare their work for further editing and revision. I enjoy encouraging students as they develop their writing, and proofreading is a valuable skill for all writers.

Elementary Education

Elementary (K-6th),

Elementary (K-6th)

I have tutored students one-on-one or in small groups in all subjects grades K-6 for 6 years. I have experience working with students with various academic and skill levels. I am able to meet each child "where they are" and help them gain confidence in areas that have been a struggle. I am patient and work with each child to find the methods and resources that work best for them.

Phonics,

Phonics

I have earned certification through University of London in "Supporting Children with Difficulties in Reading and Writing". I have taught with systematic phonics methods for years, but this course reinforced and added to my own experience in phonics instruction. I have training in structured phonics, multi-sensory, and meta-cognitive approaches. I have an understanding of the models of reading acquisition and can help to assess the areas where a student might need extra support.
Reading,

Reading

I earned a BA in English with a Journalism minor and graduated with honors. I have taught students individually and in small groups. Reading and understanding are essential to all study. Thankfully, reading is also incredibly enjoyable. Reading carefully and learning to understand structure increase comprehension. Building vocabulary is also an important component. I enjoy encouraging students as they gain these skills and get more from their reading.
Vocabulary

Vocabulary

I earned a BA in English and graduated with honors. I have taught individual students and small groups. I love to play with words and really believe in the life long value of a strong and varied vocabulary. A broad vocabulary enhances and clarifies communication. Students will enjoy learning words that will work in their writing and strengthen their reading as well.

English

English,

English

I earned a BA in English and graduated with honors. I have taught all-things-English to individual students and to small group classes. Still, I think my highest qualification for tutoring English is my love for language both written and spoken. I try to transmit a little of that excitement for language to my students (and often succeed!) Communicating clearly and well is much of what English is about. I try to help students achieve clear communication so that they can use those skills in their lives and also in their careers.

Literature,

Literature

I earned a BA in English and graduated with honors. I have taught Literature to individual students and to small group classes. I have a passion for language and reading that seems to rub off on my students. Analyzing literature involves reading carefully and learning some of the shared terms that we use to discuss literature. My classes and discussions have covered structure, themes, criticism, and techniques(and yet we still have fun!)

Extremely helpful and sweet tutor!

Dana helped me perfect an essay I was preparing for a graduate school application. She was extremely generous with her time and suggestions, and was a huge help in getting my essay where I wanted it to be. She was so easy to talk to, and I felt very comfortable working with her. She guided me to focus in on the message I was working to convey in my essay. Thank you so much, Dana! I will definitely contact you again to assist with future writing! :)

Dana is a very kind tutor.

I have learned speaking in English from Dana. Although it takes time to talk to her, she patiently waits for me. Moreover, when I didn't know meanings of sentences or words, she explained definitions to be easier to understand for me. It is helpful to study English with Dana.
