Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Dyslexia

I have earned certification in a course developed in part by Dyslexia International through the University of London - "Supporting Children with Difficulties in Reading and Writing". The studies incorporated methods of assessment that included working with and observing students. I administered tests/activities that provide information about difficulties in reading, writing, and processing. I have studied and practiced practical teaching approaches including structured phonics, multi-sensory, and meta-cognitive practices. I have also learned about study skills, aids, and accommodations. The study also covered psychological and social aspects of these difficulties as well as the positive aspects of dyslexia. The study included dyslexia related difficulties such as dyspraxia and dyscalculia.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have tutored students one-on-one or in small groups in all subjects grades K-6 for 6 years. I have experience working with students with various academic and skill levels. I am able to meet each child "where they are" and help them gain confidence in areas that have been a struggle. I am patient and work with each child to find the methods and resources that work best for them.

English

I earned a BA in English and graduated with honors. I have taught all-things-English to individual students and to small group classes. Still, I think my highest qualification for tutoring English is my love for language both written and spoken. I try to transmit a little of that excitement for language to my students (and often succeed!) Communicating clearly and well is much of what English is about. I try to help students achieve clear communication so that they can use those skills in their lives and also in their careers.

Grammar

I earned a BA in English and graduated with honors. I have taught all-things-English to individual students and to small group classes. I see grammar as a way to help us communicate more clearly. Mistakes in grammar can cause confusion or distract the listener/reader from what is being said. I don't love grammar -- I love language. I enjoy helping students sharpen their skills so that they can communicate clearly in life as well as in class.

Literature

I earned a BA in English and graduated with honors. I have taught Literature to individual students and to small group classes. I have a passion for language and reading that seems to rub off on my students. Analyzing literature involves reading carefully and learning some of the shared terms that we use to discuss literature. My classes and discussions have covered structure, themes, criticism, and techniques(and yet we still have fun!)

Phonics

I have earned certification through University of London in "Supporting Children with Difficulties in Reading and Writing". I have taught with systematic phonics methods for years, but this course reinforced and added to my own experience in phonics instruction. I have training in structured phonics, multi-sensory, and meta-cognitive approaches. I have an understanding of the models of reading acquisition and can help to assess the areas where a student might need extra support.

Proofreading

I earned a BA in English with a minor in Journalism. Editing my own work and helping students edit their work has given me experience in proofreading. I have also taught students about standard proofreading marks so that they can prepare their work for further editing and revision.
I enjoy encouraging students as they develop their writing, and proofreading is a valuable skill for all writers.

Reading

I earned a BA in English with a Journalism minor and graduated with honors. I have taught students individually and in small groups. Reading and understanding are essential to all study. Thankfully, reading is also incredibly enjoyable. Reading carefully and learning to understand structure increase comprehension. Building vocabulary is also an important component. I enjoy encouraging students as they gain these skills and get more from their reading.

SAT Reading

I earned a BA in English graduating cum laude. I am experienced with the SAT Critical Reading section. Since reading carefully and understanding what you are reading is essential in all study, Critical Reading is designed to test how well you read and comprehend. It also tests how broad your vocabulary is. I can help students improve on the skills required to read with understanding. I love words and enjoy encouraging students as we build a varied vocabulary that will benefit them long after the SAT.

SAT Writing

I earned a BA in English (Journalism minor) and graduated with honors. I have coached students in writing, and I am familiar with the Writing Section of the SAT. The test attempts to measure a students ability to recognize correct grammatical structure in writing as well as revision and editing skills. There is also as essay portion that looks for both structure as well as clear thinking and communication. I enjoy helping students understand and improve the skills they need to write clearly and well.

Vocabulary

I earned a BA in English and graduated with honors. I have taught individual students and small groups. I love to play with words and really believe in the life long value of a strong and varied vocabulary. A broad vocabulary enhances and clarifies communication. Students will enjoy learning words that will work in their writing and strengthen their reading as well.

Writing

I earned a BA in English with a minor in Journalism and graduated with honors. I have taught writing to individual students and in small groups. I truly enjoy encouraging students as they realize that they can write well. I love playing with words, and I don't approach writing as if it's drudgery. We will cover real skills and techniques that improve writing, but most importantly we will write to communicate our thoughts and ideas clearly.
