University of Maryland (Spanish)
I graduated from the University of Maryland with a degree in Spanish Languages, Literatures and Cultures in Professional Contexts with a concentration in Government and Politics in May 2014. Both of these subject matters have given me a strong background in both European and US history. I have studied Spanish for 11 years now, and have taken both the AP Spanish Language and Literature exams. Over the past 7 years I have volunteered as a tutor for English speaking students in the Spanish language as well as native Spanish speakers in English as a Second Language programs, and continue to do so today. I have also worked at a language school to aid in foreign language immersion. I feel that I am able to work with students of any age because of my experience in all of these settings. I have also tutored Elementary School children in various subjects and place great emphasis on early language phonics acquisition and mental math strategies. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I attended Catholic school of seven years in which religion classes were a requirement. Prior to this I attended religious education classes at my parish. Through all of these classes I learned about the history of the Catholic Church, world religions, medical ethics, morality, and Old and New Testament subject matters. I am also an active member of my own parish where I have taught my own religious education classes and worked in the children's nursery.
I have worked as a volunteer Spanish tutor for the University of Maryland for two years now for students in Advanced Grammar and Composition classes and lower. I have also taught English as a Second Language classes to native Spanish speaking groups, in addition to working at a language school as an aid in their immersion learning programs. All of these experiences required work in both group and individual sessions in which I would review the material covered before the lesson.
