About Timothy

I have worked in education for over ten years. I am a published writer, journalist, and I have been teaching college writing and English since 2007. From 2001 until 2008, I worked at a private school in Baltimore, working with middle school and high school students. I am also a parent. At a local community college, in addition to a full load of English courses, I worked in the writing center as a tutor, helping students with essay writing: idea development, grammar, and more. Each semester, I consult with students on their work and give specific feedback on demonstrating comprehension and engaging the reader.

My graduate degree is in writing. My background includes, in addition to teaching, sales and marketing and public speaking. I will happily share references, online writing samples, and information at your request. With 21st Century technology, I can also do tutoring partially or entirely online: e-mail, etc. Also, I teach grammar courses at the college/university level. Additionally, summer is a great time to have your student work on his or her reading, writing, and English skills. I will customize an intensive weekly - or several times per week - English Skills Camp for your student's needs. We can meet in a public library, or I can come to your home.

I look forward to discussing your tutoring needs. Please email me here if you have any questions.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

English, as an academic subject, is the study of a language - one that many millions of people use around the world to communicate. Some students need help with awareness of the differences of "home" language (possibly slang or non-standard English) and formal or academic prose. Awareness and practice are steps to mastering this complex, but fun, language. This involves looking at the parts of language (speech) and seeing how and why they fit together - what is more effective and powerful.

Grammar

As a writer, editor, and writing teacher, I will help you with formal grammar, including punctuation. Those darn commas!

Subject-verb agreement, parallel structure, style, sentence variety, and more. Grammar is a tool in your writer's tool kit.

Literature

I previously worked at a Baltimore private school library, assisting students and faculty with literature research. As a college teacher, I've taught several literature-based courses, instructing students on the comprehension of, analysis of, and written response to literature.

Public Speaking

As an educator, working with students since 2001, I presented lessons and instructions to students. Also, as an account executive I presented in-service programs and products to doctors, nurses, and other health professionals. As a college teacher, I typically lecture in classes with 15 - 22 students.

Reading

For a Baltimore-area university, I teach developmental reading. This includes reading basics: key words, ideas, vocabulary, contextual meaning, and more. One of the best ways to become a better writer, communicator, is through reading. In academics, teachers want to see evidence that the student has read and comprehends the material, can draw their own meaning and connections.

SAT Reading

I teach developmental reading at the college level. My experience includes teaching effective reading skills, comprehension, and test taking strategies. Additionally, I previously worked in a college tutoring center.

Study Skills

As a college reading teacher, at a local university, I work with students on their study skills; in fact, it is the first section of the semester. These skills include getting organized (desk, study area, supplies), reviewing assignments, reading related material, reviewing key words & ideas, and more specifics on gaining mastery of subjects. These skills are broken down into steps, added to our student (or writing) toolkit, and reviewed until they are regular habits.

Writing

As a published writer and editor, also a teacher of college writing, I am qualified to help students master the fundamentals of English comprehension and effective written expression: developing ideas, drafting & arranging, revising, and editing for clarity.
