Immediately after graduating cum laude at University of Massachusetts, I chose to volunteer as a tutor in an inner city school in Manchester, NH with an AmeriCorps program called City Year. With City Year, I spent more than 1700 hours in a 5th grade classroom serving as a tutor for students who were just below grade level. It was my job to develop and implement small group reading and math intervention based on my students' individual level of academic performance.
With City Year, I developed a passion for teaching and realized that no matter what a student's current abilities were, progress could always be made with effective instruction. I earned a Masters of Elementary Education and a Masters in Special Education from Lesley University. I have spent the last two years teaching in Baltimore City and have seen some of the most difficult students make tremendous gains.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
With City Year I volunteered over 1700 hours in which I planned and implemented small group math intervention to help students catch up to their peers. As a teacher, I have seen students of all academic abilities master Common Core math standards after effective instruction.
As a teacher of record I have seen tremendous growth in my students' reading due to making phonics a daily priority. I spend 30 minutes a day teaching phonics to students through various activities and learning centers. I have seen increased reading comprehension in students as a result of better being able to decode.
Reading comprehension in fiction and non-fiction is a very difficult skill to strengthen. Students need access to complex texts and be asked rigorous questions that allow them to think critically and apply appropriate reading strategies. As a reading teacher, I undertake this task everyday with whole group and small groups of children of all reading abilities. I use data driven instruction to focus on the exact skill(s) each student needs to strengthen, leading to increased comprehension of all texts.
